The Skellig Islands - An extraordinary experience.

... bird mass I have ever witnessed.

You need a dose of Irish luck to even make it to the islands. Trips run at most 100 days of the year. The boat ride out on a calm day is enough to make the average traveller seasick. I can’t even imagine the size of the waves and swells on the 265 days of the year that it isn’t safe to venture out to the islands.

Boats generally leave ...

A Little Bit of Heaven

... sat in the lounge.

The Swansons came back after dinner since the town was shut down except for the pubs. We talked a bit and they told us about the three years they spent in Germany. We all rode together to town and enjoyed the trad music for about an hour. They were tired from their drive and we wanted to check in with people at home, so we left.

It’s another beautiful night with the moon high in the sky--more promises of another beautiful day!

Driving the Dingle

... obelisk with symbols) and a mysterious sundial. It had some remarkably intact carvings and very old as well as recent graves in the churchyard.

A stone ring fort was supposed to be nearby, and we drove up and down the same road twice before I spotted the name of the fort on a stone by the road. The fort itself was over a rock wall, so I waited while John explored a bit. We find the signage here to be somewhat of a challenge. When the sign (if there is one) has an arrow, the turn is ...

Moving On Down the Road

With binoculars, we can probably see Fungie for free! Our hostess is Angela, and her dog Holly is the official greeter.

We drove back into town and went into a few shops. Dingle Crystal has some lovely things, and we talked for a bit with Sean Daly, the cutter. He ...

A "short" trip to Dingle

... is a neat seaport town. We wanted to go out on the boat and meet Fungee the dolphin, but it was seriously windy and cold, so we decided against it. We ate lunch in Murphy's Pub - finally having fish and chips and sampling the cider. We also shared a piece of apple pie which was really interesting. The crust was sort of cake-like. salads in Ireland are kind of interesting also. They are mostly garnish with a tad bit of lettuce to sit it on. I guess it ...

FOOTLOOSE IN DINGLE

... froth of indignation on our behalf. She was certainly formidable, and soon we were on our way to Tralee in a taxi, the tab being picked up by the bus company and from then on, it all worked and we arrived at Dingle to be met by our guest-house lady, Maggie. The buses work, and we certainly used them, but they are not cheap. In fact, nothing in Ireland is cheap; not even the home brew. Dingle is a colourful, cheerful and ...

Beligerent Irish boy

... where yer frum,". It took us a few minutes to piece together the information of why this person came to our table, spoke to us then sat down, what he actually said and what he was trying to say. After about 20 minutes, we worked out that he was simply a moron and no further thought need be put to the matter. We left Dingle the next day - there are some lovely photo spots around Dingle and it is where most of the cliff photos you see will come from.

Driving half of Ireland in half the time

... t necessarily supposed to be accessible, but it seemed lots of people were hopping the fence and going along anyway, so my dad and I decided to give it a go. Really all this accomplished though was completely muddying up my pants and shoes (neither of which were really built for this weather and both of which were my only pair respectively -- the joys of backpacking) while focusing more on not stepping in the ******** than enjoying the view. We drove that night to the ...

Kenmare – Dingle – Kilrush

(Originally published at http://www.troysgonewalkabout.com)
< br>Our thatched cottage in Kenmare hadn’t just been a great place to stay. It had also been the perfect strategic point from which to start our day’s scenic drive around the Ring of Kerry. So with a fond farewell from our host Davey fit for long lost cousins – though said with a Kerry accent so thick we think we managed to get the gist of it &#8211 ...

Dissapointed Ring but thrilled with the Dingle

... the madness. The only hotel brand I did not see was a Red Roof. If you search long enough, you will see some resemblance to the small Irish town this once was. Shopping is the activity here and can be found on High Street and New Street. Backtracking past Muckross Lake we decided to skip part of "The Ring", taking R568 through inland into Sneem (stopping again at Ladies' View). The sky is brighter and the ...
