... s why you don't feel well." Luzlanda on Sunday: "You shouldn't go to the World AIDS Day march tomorrow. Only walk when you need to." Me: "Great. I can sleep an extra hour." Me on Monday morning: "So how are we getting to work this morning?" Luzlanda: "We're walking." Walking to the office is about 12 times farther than the one-block World AIDS Day march. Me on Friday: "I'm going to keep taking my antibiotics until my cut closes up." Luzlanda on Friday: "Yes ...
Neyba, Dominican Republic akb2icThere won't be many more entries unfortunately as the week is rapidly drawing to a close. This afternoon we had the chance to get Team GB together to share our thoughts about the trip so far. Some of the memories we will all take away are very special. We enjoyed it so much we have arranged to meet together on Saturday. We will be one of the ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic joyfernando... bus, 90% humidity and we had to go through this for over an hour! mmmm. Once we got to the beach, it was really crowded - being a sunday - stank of fish because there were dozens of stalls deep frying fresh, whole fish, and you couldnīt hear yourself think because nearly every car had a set of Jonah Lomu speakers in its boot blasting out merengue so loud it made your rib cage hum. Itīs a busy, noisy place Santo Domingo, and definitely has that quintessential Caribbean feel to it.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic couplakiwis... But it was very impressive to see and hear how much their dedicated!! At the end they say thank you for like 100 times! They hug us and I really see that they mean what they say... Impressive again... After this it's already lunch time. So they bring many meals for all and we have lunch with them. We talk with several people & many kids come from the school to this place. We make photos and had a good time. Especially one girl (see photo --> ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic aberweger... Although don't get me wrong, I LOVE the trashy mags and candy :) In other random news, I have been using my new stovetop oven device like crazy and I love it! So far I have made brownies, mango crisp, cornbread, banana bread, and baked ziti, all of which were delicious. I am bringing it home with me so I can take it camping, etc, in the future. Let's see, what else? Stella is as cute as ever. She turned one year old ...
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic margaretkirlin... I have no guilt...it was glorious! :) Now I am at my official site in a campo site close to Santiago, and life is pretty great. My family is crazy, but I love them. They are completely overprotective, and I had to fight to let them let me leave the house alone...EVER. I couldn't go to the school sola, walk around my town, go into the city...nada. It was driving me crazy, BUT I've made progess this week as I've been going to the schools everyday, running by ...
Santiago, Dominican Republic kelsianne82So within a 5 week period 3 teenage girls have decided to get married! It is starting to make me really depressed considering that now there are only 4 girls left that are not married. In other words, they havenīt decided to have sex which entails moving in with their boyfriend to be their wife forever. It just really upsets me. But I guess in a way there is nothing else for these teens to do. There is no future awaiting them so why not just start a family as soon as ...
Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic serina300... there and write the responses...most of which consists of I dont knows....into my note book. So far it looks like I will be doing some garbage cleanups, and some upgrades on the latrines. For the most part, the community has toilette access...its just a matter of maintaining them! And I will be giving lots of charlas...or talks to the community about basic health info.....I will be a teacher for two years. BUT first, I should be focusing on this diagnostic. I just wish ...
Palo Verde, Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic serina300... the helicoptor arrived to medivac me. My counterpart, Neyhira, convinced everyone that she and her husband could take me, and that I was in-fact, going to make it afterall, not to panic. Glad to have her as my P.R. person, I finished packing and went with them to the capital, as finally my hectic day..no, WEEK would finally be graced with peace. Of course that was not going to happen. Along the way, the car made some noises. After breaking down 8 TIMES on the ...
Pimentel, Dominican Republic lisalew... other than you have to experience it. Technically there are laws, but for some reason they are optional. The common methods of transportation are carros publicos, motoconchos, and gauguas. The guaguas are a trip. You could walk down the street and the bus will follow you, annoying you as a way to get you on the bus. They even help you get on and off the bus. They pack the bus so it is best to hide things in your bra on in your shoes because after ...
