First week in Ohakune

... interlocking tendrils blindly but incessantly seeking nutrition. Though this cannot be difficult, for the ground is very damp, and accordingly much fungus grows - more varieties than I have ever seen.

The forest is so quiet that all I hear are my crunching footsteps, and when I stop not even the canopy stirs, for it is a still day.

Sometimes you will hear the low grumbling creek and twist of the tallest and oldest trees far above, but you cannot see them.

... were able to fly due to the weather, and we arrived in time to see our fellow Strays land and some just take off to go. We waited while the plane headed up and kept our eyes peeled for parachutes. A good break in the cloud meant we saw some people free fall before the chutes opened and glided back to earth.

A chilly but bright start, blue skies and sunshine. Only a short distance today so a relaxed start and leisurely breakfast but were still on the road by 10.15, filled and dumped. The journey from Nelson to our next night's stay in Okahune was a troubled and tiring one. We left Nelson and drove around the Queen Charlotte Sound coastal route to Picton.
