Day 1: Jaipur sightseeing

... non A/C ones.

Bani Park- situated in the heart of the city is a good residential area with lots of amenities and good hotels. This place is a few minutes walk from the railway station and the bus stop. We stayed in Krishna Palace Hotel. It has well furnished rooms with air cooling facilities. The room services and the hospitality is worth mentioning. After dumping our luggage in the hotel we left for ...

elephants and castles!

... cool!! we enquired about the treatment of the elephants here and were assured that each elephant is licenced for just three trips a day and can carry a maximum of two guests at a time. whether it works out like that or not we cant tell, but at least the local government is trying to help with their welfare.

we ate in a lovely restaurant here and were treated to some traditional indian sitar music and a little bit of dancing!

definately worth a visit.

Jaipur

... a rickety old 50 cc scooter and then third was a decrepid and underfed livestock animal of some sort. Thankfully...he had the first thing I pictured: a motorcycle. It was a bit interesting getting on that thing with a big backpack on...but once I was settled in it was actually quite comfortable. We were snaking through the mountains and doing some hairpin turns down the mountain pass and I was kinda just hanging on and hoping for a positive outcome. Finally into Ajmer (and some 30 ...

Pink City contd

... all religions here you would probably get the whole year off!! I recruit a rickshaw driver-a straggly man in his fifties who has the structure of soeone who can just about pedal the bike without passing out.But my redoubtable hero fears nothing and that mainly includes the traffic.I board and he steadfastly pedals into traffic-I once again rummage to try and find my rosary hoping for luck.As we pedal furiously up the ...

And then there was shopping

... I understood, in that moment, what all the fuss is about. I really could have stayed there for a month. We did a little damage with shopping in Jaipur (the shopping capital, after all)....i picked up a beautiful bedspread & handmade silk carpet. The dudes who sold me the carpet spent 7 hours trying to get a stain out before bringing it to our Guest House at 9 PM.....when they insisted on coming into our room (Chris' room seemed the obvious choice at that point), made ...

I-pur like Jaipur

... two large silver jars. You may be asking..."Brandon, what's so special about two large silver jars?". The interesting thing is not the jars themselves...but what they were used for. In 1902 the Maharaja took a trip to visit England for the King's coronation. He was worried about the quality of drinking water along the way so he had these two jars made and filled them with water from the Ganges river to take with him. My ...

Things to do in Jaipur

... hand. Their merchandise is pricey but very nice. However, this is not the reason that we all love it so much. The reason it is so popular with those of us at the institute is that they have a cafe that sells food that doesn't taste anything like Indian food! They actually have good coffee!!! Seriously, this is a find here in Jaipur. They bring you a french press full of delicious coffee and a side of warm ...

Laughing my way to Jaipur

... we decided to make a beeline for our guesthouse and pass away the day in Jaipur- oddly enough, my original plan. We managed to snag the only bicycle rickshaw that hadn't heard of our guesthouse, but he was too proud to admit it and instead drove us (and all of our luggage) up and down the hills and in and out of the alleys. At one point he actually asked a strapping young lad to help push us over the bridge- how's that for making ...

Jaipur - host family and amber fort

... of sites to take in on the way! i tried to sleep but couldn't because i thought i might miss out on a nice view. When we entered Rajasthan and started passing through the villages, i remembered how hard life us for many indians, living in a 'house' made of pieces of scrap metal!when we got into jaipur it seemed like delhi again...loads of crazy traffic with people trying to sell you stuff when u stop at traffic lights! We were taken to the ...
