Days 21 to 24: Singapore

So on to Singapore after a boat ride, cab ride and short flight from Phuket which all went swimmingly, especially when we managed to get an earlier flight on standby saving us a 5 hour wait in Phuket airport.

In Singapore we have done three days of sightseeing. We bought a 3 day pass to the hop on hop off tourist bus and used this to ferry us around the various sights

We have been on the flyer (which is good as they are putting up the F1 circuit gear and it is right by the whee...

Arrival

First off: Changi airport rocks! The decorations, the atmosphere, the shops, the bathrooms, the way it is organized... Who wouldn't want to become a homeless person and sleep there forever? Arrived on my own from Jakarta and I waited at the airport for about half an hour to meet up with my father who flew all the way from Dubai to see The Police. Yes, I know, we are a bunch of obsessive nutcases, but Jakarta isn't exactly the place where big-name bands perform every weekend, so we considered ...

Day 6: First Day in Singapore

Our flight from Tokyo left at 5:45pm......7 hours later we landed in Singapore where the airport was a zoo. It was about thirty minutes past midnight and the taxi line was nuts so we took one of the limousine taxi instead (a white Mercedes taxi) into the city. The ride took about 20 minutes and we were so dead tired by the time we got to the hotel. We are staying at the Royal Plaza on Scotts which is near Orchard blvd (where all the shopping is) The lobby itself was a bit gaudy and there was ...

Blast off!

Oh yeah, uh-huh... who's going to New Yawk? I AM! was feeling totally stoked that morning, despite the disgusting whatever-it-is-I've-got. Tried my best to look all perky and healthy so as the airline people would let me on the plane. We touched down in Singapore and got a day room at the Royal Plaza. I was stuck in bed all day (Boo-hoo!) trying to get better while my sibs went out to buy 'Fried Cheese.' Yes, people, fried cheese. (It was actually a cheese korroke thingy, but Fried Cheese sou...

Day 60 Friday March 3 2006 I manage to get up at 3:45am and catch my flight to Singapore via Yojojakarta and Jakarta and spend quite a bit on departure taxes in the process! I get to Singapore this afternoon and find my hotel easily. I've decided to treat myself for the next couple of nights and book myself a room at the 5-star Royal Plaza on Scotts hotel in Singapore. It only costs 50 quid a night - the same as the travel inn back home as I booked it on the net. The hotel is amazing and the ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Royal Plaza On Scotts - A Summit Hotel Singapore

Great Travel Breaker

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed with my wife and daughter at the Royal Plaza for 2 nights in August as part of a round the world trip. Chose the hotel as a result of positive Tripadvisor reviews and booked via Wotif (gave better rates than the hotel direct). We shared a Club Deluxe room and were very pleased with our choice. Check in was very efficient, the room was not especially flash but was functional and the Club Lounge was excellent - free breakfast, daytime snacks and cocktails in the evening. We found it an excellent respite from the heat and shopping in Orchard Road and well worth the extra if you can afford it. One reviewer has commented on insufficient towels. This was also the case for us but a quick call to Room Service fixed that. The location was excellent for our needs as Orchard Road and the Hop-On Hop-Off bus stop are only a few steps away. Would stay again.

Overpriced and a rip-off

from A TripAdvisor Member
Firstly, let me admit that I booked this hotel at the wrong time of the year when all hotels were full - so I was forced to accept a basic room for SGD450 per night - an absolutely outrageous sum - the hotel is clearly profiteering. I stay frequently at the Sheraton Towers and Raffles The Plaza and both are much better and cheaper - even at full rack rates.

The room at the Royal Plaza was basic to say the least - when I enquired about the cable for the high-speed internet I was informed it was $10 - i.e. you had to buy it - after complaining about this at a room rate of $450 they let me borrow one. The broadband internet is also far much expensive than either the Sheraton or the Raffles Plaza.

They say they give you a "free minibar" worth some $65 value - rubbish!! All it contained was two bottles of an unknown brand of water, 4 cans of soda and two cans of beer.

The bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen in a "top" hotel - and only two towels provided.

The view from the window was non-existant and I was on a high floor.

All in all I would never stay there again - way overpriced and undersupplied. A big rip-off. I remember during SARS how Singapore hotels were virtually giving rooms away - obviously the Royal Plaza on Scotts does not feel it needs to attract and retain guests.

Excellent Hotel and Great value for money.

from maac56
I stayed at this hotel for five nights and had a really great experience. Checkin was extremely quick and the room was beyond my expectations.

The bathroom was quite roomy and well stocked with quality lotions and soaps.

The addition of the FREE mini-bar was a real bonus. I made very good use of its contents, which were replenished daily. The contents consisted of 2 Beer, 2 bottles of water and five cans of various lemonade. Any item that was not used were not replenished, so i made sure i set aside the unused items for later use.

Room service was very quick and the quality and cost of the meals was very good value compared to other similar hotels i have stayed in.

The hotel is ideally situated close to Orchard Road, in fact less than 2 mins walk.

I have no hesitation recommending this hotel, its value for money, has very friendly staff. is in a great location, in fact i will be staying here on my next visit to Singapore.

Very Nice!

from Kanerva
After a long flight it was nice to arrive to a hotel with such a good

service. Everyone was really nice and a shower/resting opportunity

was arranged for us, as we arrived early in the morning.

The room was big, clean & nice. Complimentary mini-bar

was something new!

Location could not be better - near Orchard Road shopping

opportunities and near MTR-train station.

I warmly recommend.

Lovely and of good value

from A TripAdvisor Member
the place has a great location. Scotts road is perpendicular to Orchard Road in Singapore where the best shops are located. and the prices are lower than the hotels located directly on Orchard Road.

it's seldom that hotels give anything complimentary anymore but this one gives complimentary drinks at the bar.

it has good restaurants and if you don't like 'em, there are a lot others around. there's a 7-11 store nearby on Orchard Road for your emergency needs. and the place is rather safe.

the rooms are big enough and security in the hotel is commendable.

concierge is very helpful and well-informed too.

Great location

from dogcowzz
I stayed at this hotel for a week long holiday. Had a lovely view of the adjacent carpark. Rooms were nice, but a bit tired. They need a bit of refreshing. Paint work a bit dodgey and some of the powerpoints didn't work. A bonus was the mini-bar drinks which were refreshed daily. just don't expect them to come back if you're in the shower. You'll need to call downstairs to ask them to come back. Breakfast buffet was good. Even for the fussy eaters. Pool was great. Very relaxing after a hard day shopping. The hotel is very close to Orchard road and the Orchard MRT station. (Two to three blocks) Supermarket close by in the basement of Isetan shopping centre. Lucky as the evening buffet was $43 SGD per person. A bit rich considering it was not that spectacular. Wait for the weekend seafood buffet if you're going to splurge. The concierge staff were exceptional. Ordering a taxi was a breeze. Taxi turned up early and was waiting for us. DFS store located in the lobby. Good for last minute gifts, but the prices were three to four times that of stores in Chinatown and Orchard Road. I'd definately recommend this hotel to others. Just be wary of the internet booking site operated by the hotel. Many of the requests I made online didn't make it to their check-in system.

An amazing place to stay...

from CX
A really nice place to stay in Singapore. Close to the shopping area (orchard street) and in the center of a live dine and have fun area. I was upgraded to royal club floor, meaning a larger room with a walk-in closet and access to Royal Club Lounge for bkf, tea, drinks and snacks - all free! In the Lounge you may have a variety of drinks (alcohol or soft drinks) warm and cold snacks (real tasty food) and read a magazine or watch tv or check your mail @ the available pcs! Cleaness of room and hotel @ the maximum, politeness and friendliness of stuff - a no worry stay! Hotel offers a small swimming pool and gym - not the best around. Mini bar in the room was free (4 soft drinks, mineral water and coffee-tea tray) and replenished daily! Toilettries, a bath robe, an in- the- room- safe were available for free and every night a flower on my pillow! Getting there from the airport or back with a taxi costs only 17 S$ or 9 Euro a way!

Overall: real value for money!

The location of this hotel is excellenet, just rooms are a little bit small and definately NO VIEW, ask for higher floor rooms or get a Royal Club room, Do not forget the BRIX Bar, across the street next to Grand Hyatt Lobby,

Great location, this hotel exceeded all expectations after a bumpy start.Booked on the net,we arrived to find they didnt have our reservation. We had booked the Club Floor so we were ushered to the Club Lounge & plied with drinks while it was sorted.

2 hrs later,we were shown to our room.Fairly standard but nice view & free minibar daily.

(1 beer,2 water,3 soft drinks).

Service was terrific but the Club features make this hotel exceptional value.Breakfast til 10.30 in the lounge, restricted to approx 40 people, afternoon tea with nibbles & evening drinks with more nibbles 6-8.

As anyone who's been there knows, alcohol is $$$ so 2 hrs of freebies is a great start to the evening.

2 minutes from Orchard Rd,easy to get a cab with help from concierge, this place is a bargain,

GET a Club floor room, worth the extra.

Great location for shopping

from A TripAdvisor Member
The location of the hotel is excellent, if you want to go shopping, Scotts road is hardly a 1 minute walk from Orchard street which is the heart of Singapore Shopping. The staff was very polite and helpful. The rooms were a tad small but that was ok considering the price. Be sure to enroll in the Royal Club membership, when we were staying they had a promotional scheme at 40$ for Royal Club, wherein you got free breakfast for 2, afternoon tea and cocktails and internet access. The only down point is the view from the rooms as they face another building, other than that the stay was a very pleasant one.
