Another side of Bangkok
Jun 21, 2008 (5 photos)

Friday, June 21, 2008 We slept in today, correction, Ravneet slept in. I was up at 5am. Turned on the tele and got a huge shock: Portugal lost to Germany. Undefeated Portugal was supposed to win. Isn't Ronaldo just the biggest cry baby?!? I hope Man U sells him to Real, and then he gets benched and moves to the LA Galaxy, because L.A. will be ve...

Day 2 Bangkok
Jun 20, 2008 (21 photos)

Thursday, June 19, 2008 We arrived in Bangkok at 730am and by 9am we were checking into the hotel. I felt so welcome; I mean Thai culture really lived up to its name during the check-in process, instead of haggling over my room rate for 15mins, we only haggled for 10mins. Thank you! Oh sweet receptionist. Cool thing is that our room has a view o...

Hitting the ground running
Apr 2, 2008 (5 photos)

Hey everyone! As promised, I've started a travel blog. I'm sitting in our very nice hotel in Bangkok, Thailand at 7:26am on April 2. Local time here is eleven hours ahead of EST in the US. Thanks to my friend Vanessa for keeping me out on the town almost all night Saturday night in NYC so I was able to get some shuteye on the plane Sunday-Monday...

One night in Bangkok
Feb 28, 2008

We were both very excited today about reuniting with Cindy and Robert. S has been showing severe signs of home sickness, and the pain he is suffering probably hasn't helped that. When we finally crawled out of bed late this morning I packed my bag and that was pretty much all I had time for before check out. We both wanted juice so we sat in the...

Have just booked to go on a 3 hour Temple tour this aftermoon & then a Dinner Cruise on the river this evening, before we leave at 11.30pm to go to the airport &...

The Grand Palace and a Thai massage
Feb 2, 2008 (30 photos)

I woke up to a greeting of "wakey wakey, hands off snakey" from Robert. It seemed kind of strange being as I was positive he knows I don't have a "snakey" on my person, which I explained to him, just in case. He tossed me a banana. This is our last day in Bangkok, and even though yesterday had its culture adjustment moments (all relating to gett...

Learning the ropes
Feb 1, 2008 (30 photos)

Last night Robert fell asleep in about five seconds, and immediately started snoring. Luckily I was very tired so I managed to fall asleep anyway, without even bothering to find my ear plugs. I slept about six hours and woke up before 9:00 am. I took yet another shower and by the time I was ready so was the rest of the crew. We decided to try th...

28 hours to Bangkok
Feb 1, 2008 (9 photos)

It is now 2:30am in Bangkok but we are here in our room. I've had a nice warm shower in the beautiful air-conditioned Sheraton. We landed in Bangkok at midnight after about 28 hours of flying and waiting in airports. The flights here were OK. From Calgary to San Francisco we were seated together. We were on a tiny little plane that only sat four...

Aloha Bangkok
Jan 22, 2008 (9 photos)

Rosemary and I left Saturday afternoon for Honolulu where we opted to stay close to the airport for our very early departure the next morning. The Best Western, at the Airport has been renovated and was actually a very pleasant stopover. We did a little last minute shopping at Ala Moana where I convinced Rosemary she needed some new luggage to c...

Back in Bangkok
May 2, 2007

I needed to go through Bangkok again to get some admin things taken care of. I arranged my Vietnam visa, got a plane ticket to Saigon, and mailed home a bunch of cold weather gear I used on the Everest Base Camp trek. I spent a few days in Bangkok doing that stuff and enjoying the hospitality at the Royal Orchid Sheraton as well as the great foo...

Tower Suites well worth the extra cash

from dlcm on 2005-03-30
Travelled to Bangkok in March2005. As this was our first trip to Bangkok we were a little apprehensive, but when we arrived at the Royal Orchid we were very pleased.

Upon arrival we were offered an upgrade to a tower room, not free but reasonably priced considering we had booked room only, this included a top floor room with a great river view,a good breakfast which was served in a lovely lounge, free laundry and use of the tower lounge with complementary drinks between 6 and 7, always a plus!

The rooms are very nice with large comfortable beds, room service was good but needed a reminder to get it on time. We tried the Italian restaurant on our last night, the food was very nice and service excellent but it was quiet, so no atmosphere.

The hotel is connected to the River City shopping centre which has some nice antique shops which are a bit pricey and a selection of restaurants, none of which are that special. A river taxi will take you across to the Yok Yor restaurant, we tried this but the service was terrible although the food was ok.

To get around the city the river taxi's and the metered taxi's are the best option. The skytrain is ok but with a limited service if you're near the river.

All in all a very good hotel in a nice location with good service.

many thanks

An Excellent Choice - No complaints.

from A TripAdvisor User on 2005-03-18
I have not one single complaint about this hotel. I booked this hotel through Virgin Holidays for our honeymoon. We stayed 4 nights with complimentary breakfast which was truly 5 STAR. All of the amenities are of a high standard the outdoor pools are fantastic, the business centre was just perfect as we could burn all our digi pics on cd, the quality of service was excellent - i personally tipped each of the porters on our final day, the location is probably one of the best in Bangkok.

We actually made some time to visit other top hotels in bangkok and i think that by comparison the RO Sheraton is actually more pleasant.

Any visits to Bangkok in the future and i have no hesitation about where i will be staying!!!

Great location, views

from redheadca on 2005-03-17
Stayed here in February 2005. Lovely room overlooking the busy Chao Phraya river. (Agree with all the previous posts.) Breakfast with the room had an excellent selection with Asian and Western items.

Although there is a free shuttle to the skytrain station, during rush hours it is faster to hop the water bus to the skytrain station (otherwise you're stuck in traffic for quite a while).

If you go next door to the Art & Antique Mall (which has some spectacular stuff), you can catch free water shuttles to The Peninsula or The Oriental Hotel and a few other places. This info doesn't seem to be widely advertised, however.

There are several restaurants on site. One has a cultural show with a Thai buffet each night.

The hotel will provide pickup service from the airport, but it's over twice what you'll pay for a meter taxi. Don't stop for the guys asking if you want a taxi before you leave the airport secured area...go out and get a metered taxi off the curb, it'll be cheaper.

The Royal Orchid is lovely. I'd gladly stay there again.

Very Average - but good view from room

from steveshute on 2005-02-14
We have spent 4 days at The Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok recently.

After spending 3 days at the Landmark Hotel this hotel turned out to be a disappointment. Although the view of the river from the room was terrific.

Given this country is the 'Land of Smiles' the staff were not very friendly, attentive and in the restaurant we had to wait to be served and the tables at times were not cleared.

The menu was limited and not varied at all.

On the plus side the hotel was clean but the room in which we stayed needed an upgrade of the bathroom.

The Garden Pool was nice but the water was extremeley cold and the jacuzzi was colder still!!

The location (although next to the river) is not very good for visiting around Bangkok.

If you go to Bangkok stay at the Landmark Hotel - far superior !!!

Nice central place

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-12-08
Just got back from three nights. First of all, the location can't be beat - and they have a free shuttle to the skytrain. Nice rooms (we're in spg so we got a suite) and extremely gracious service. The pool was also great for laps - very important to me. I'd definitely stay here again

Superb hotel - good room (with views!), great location, great amenities

from Haarlem on 2004-11-24
Stayed here in November 2003 and again in February 2004. Location is great (right on the river, next to a boat stop), which makes traveling around so much easier and faster (avoiding traffic jams!) during the day. Alternatively, taxis to anywhere are extremely affordable. Rooms all have river views and are of good standard. Pools & fitness center are great. Great bands play in the hotel bar at night (during both stays) - good atmosphere & service.

Wonderful hotel, great location

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-11-22
We stayed at the Royal Orchid for 3 days in early November 2004 and it was one of the most pleasant stays we have had in any hotels for a long time. A lot of people in various discussion groups suggested getting a hotel room with a riverview while in Bangkok and they were correct.

I had actually booked a standard riverview room through an internet third-party website, and by the time we checked into the hotel it was overbooked. Thus, we were immediately upgraded to the Tower suites, top floor. Although we weren't allowed to use the other Tower suites perks, we still enjoyed their wonderful room.

The room on the 28th floor was fantastic, very spacious and clean with a good king sized bed. The view was pretty much from floor to ceiling. Washrooms were very clean and modern, and rooms included a minibar, bathrobes and cable tv. Service was excellent as well, and buffet breakfast was standard with lots of fruits and a mix of hot and cold selections.

Location of the hotel is very good as well. It is right next to a water boat (bus) station, which you can easily ride up to the grand palace or wat po. You can also take a free hotel shuttle to the nearest Skytrain station, although the shuttles don't run that frequently.

Overall, my wife & I truly enjoyed the Royal Orchid and I would definitely stay there again while visiting Bangkok.

Great location, great service, great views

from SandyV1 on 2004-10-03
This was my third stay at the Royal Orchid Sheraton and it was good to see that the great service and high standards have been maintained. The hotel is in a terrific location right on the river and all rooms have river views. Room pricing is also very competitive for a 5 star property.

Great hotel

from bonjovirock on 2004-09-30
Spent three nights at the Royal Orchid Sheraton in Nov 2003 and it was fantastic. Stayed in the Towers room which had separate lounge area, huge bathroom with jacuzzi and stunning views of the river and Place etc. Complimentary breakfast was great and ate at restaurant one night but food in Bangkok is SO cheap I really suggest you get out and about to explore (3 course meal for two plus beer on banks of river for eight UK pounds)!! Great location next to river taxi stop, although shopping complex next door is a bit dated.

Great Location, with brilliant sevice

from rosebery46 on 2004-09-06
The first impression you have arriving at the hotel is the increased security all arriving cars are searched and checked.

The hotel lobby is fairly standard for the style of hotel with lots of wood and very busy. Checkin went smoothly and we where offer an paid for upgrade as we where on a room only rate. it was $40 per room and included breakfast, 6 pieces of Laundary per day per person and free use of the excutive lounge which offered complimentary coffeee and soft drinks all day and a free happy hour from 5.30 to 7.00 pm.

The rooms and facilities are exctulayy what you would expect from any number of 4* hotels but this hote has one feature that makes it stand out the staff are 4 excellent always on hand to help and doing it with a smile.

I would totally recommend this hotel to anyone who wanted a very good location and excellent service the local river boat pier is next door to the hotels and you can be quickly and easily on your way to the wonderful sights of the city.
