... stay in Tatsue and then the last night in Osaka. The temple I stayed in is on the route for the pilgrims that wslk sround Shikoku. So it was a really different feeling than koya san. Not being a pilgrim I felt really out of place and noone really spoke any English. The head monk knew a few words, showed me my tatami room. The next time I saw him he had his fancy robes on and was chanting in the temple for ...

... station in the middle of nowhere. The "town" had no shops and it only had the local outdoor vending machines as supplies. Having not eaten and knowing we had a further 2 hour train ride, we had to settle for a "calorie mate" bar which can only be described as a gone off Scottish shortbread biscuit without any sugar. Delicious. To accompany the calorie mate bar we each had an awful canned coffee which had clearly been in the vending machine for years as no one ever ...

I pitched the tent and hoped and prayed for no more rain. The sky kept me guessing as it stayed black for ...

... to be a sign. 15min later I was aboard one of 3 trains leaving that day and being whisked through a milky landscape as fog rolled down the mountain side. I didn't feel bad for cheating just a little. If Japanese pilgrims can go by car (taxi even), motorcycles and buses then heck, I'm allowed to use the train. And that's that. The youth hostel had closed of course but there was a budget Inn opposite the train station. While waiting for the weather to clear up ...

I can see why this is off-season for walking henro.. Or any pilgrims for that matter. It is crazy hot and humid. On my first day I seriously wondered what I had gotten myself into. I downed litre after litre of water. My backpack grew from 10kg to a hundred kilos, or so it felt anyway. The route led me passed rice paddies and small villages. Nowhere was any shadow to hide in. During the 6km walk between two of the temples I thought I was about to collapse, I just could't hack that ...
