... really need to come up with another adjective...), and definitely had a reverential tone about the place. There was also a quiet buzz of excitement – there were some families and groups you could tell were just visiting this one temple, but for many people Ryozen-ji was the beginning or end of a long adventure.

A strange day to do a walk for no reason. Cloudy with the sun threatening to burst through I started on the first five temples of the famous 88 temple walk. ... station in the middle of nowhere. The "town" had no shops and it only had the local outdoor vending machines as supplies. Having not eaten and knowing we had a further 2 hour train ride, we had to settle for a "calorie mate" bar which can only be described as a gone off Scottish shortbread biscuit without any sugar.
