On to Dublin
Jul 22, 2007 (5 photos)

Our ferry arrived at the Dublin Ferryport at 5:55 a.m. We slept a bit here and there. Jake got kicked in the head by a stranger. He just rolled over and went back to sleep. So did the stranger. We spent the night on benches in a deli. Honestly, the boat was very nice... almost like a cruise ship. It was just that the trip began at 2:40 a.m. and ...

Nice hotel overall

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-04-08
The staff were very friendly in general. The room was spacious and the shower was good. The bathroom taps did not work well at all. The hotel looked inviting and spaciousl. The full breakfast was really good, but the evening meal had strange combinations of lamb and black sausage and the pasta meal was very bland. Room service paninis, were, however, very good. We ordered dessert to share with our evening meal and it arrived in one small ramekin dish, minus the cookies, which were meant to accompany it. At night the street outside was very noisy and I was unable to sleep until late. During the day O'Connell Street was very crowded. Overall it was a good central location, but very noisy at night.

Very Friendly Staff

from JWI on 2004-04-08
The location is great, right on historic O'Connell Street, just a few minutes walk from the Liffey and the Temple Bar area. Grafton Street is about a ten minute walk, but what a great walk anyway. The staff was quite friendly and helpful. The front desk let me check in early, and did it with a smile. Total courtesy from top to bottom. They called the airlines for me to see if my relatives' flights had come in. The restaurant staff was so welcoming and charming. Considering that my breakfast was included in my room rate, this was a great deal. I will definitely stay there again.

Great hotel

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-03-07
Hotel Royal was fantastic. We were really impressed with the standard of the rooms, they were excellent. We didn't notice any noise, although we were at the back of the hotel so couldn't hear the street. The staff were nice & the bar was great, staying open late for us when we got back in the early hours.

Just don't get a room on the street

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-03-04
The hotel staff was quite friendly, although they did forget to give me a wake up call on a day I had a tour booked. There is a bus stop directly in front of the hotel, so every 10-15 minutes there is a new line of gabbing (sometimes screaming) people. The noise outside is terrible. The location is good, so if you want to stay here, just request a room not facing the street.

Let down by outside noise level

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-03-02
The Hotel is clean and tidy and I got an excellent welcome. However, I stayed in a room which overlooked O'Connell Street. The windows are singled glazed and stream with condensation during the night, plus the outside noise is unbearable especially when the local Council Road Sweeper works at 4.30am. The room was clean but very dated, although the Hotel is slowly being modernized. The staff were extremely friendly and polite. The breakfast is first class, the best I have had anywhere and sets you up for the day. As to whether I would stay there again, I would have to say probably not because of the noise as I like a good nights undisturbed sleep.

Great Location!

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-02-13
Good 3 star accommodation, nice breakfast and nice room which was overlooking O'Connell street. Staff very friendly and helpful. Ideal location, just 8 minutes walk to Temple Bar area for those who are looking for a lively night, yet far enough away to avoid street noise.

Recommend Dublin City Tour Bus, drivers are fantastic! Very amusing! I would recommend this accommodation and would go back in the future!

Enjoy your trip!

Spot on

from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-12-11
Just spent a 'kend @ the royal Dublin celebrating a freinds 40th.We were a mixed party of 8 adults and had the time of our lives.Must agree with previous reveiwer re the sausages, they were spot on as was the whole breakfast,a big plateful of bacon, egg etc, certainly sets you up for the day,and was being served by Irelands chirpiest chef.A very nice hotel with lovely rooms and bars, would recommend this place to anyone, all in with flights from Leeds and 2 nights accom B&B,it cost us £180 each.......a bargain. As for the city itself, well what a place, fantastic array of pubs and places to eat, altho the staff in the Chinese opp the Royal were a miserable bunch of humourless sods.As for the locals, they were really welcoming and helpful, and you didn't feel like they were after your money as in the stinking hell holes of the med.All in all a top destination for a couple o' nights on the sauce, make you sure you have @ least one night round the Temple Bar area, loads o' pubs and loads o' freindly people.........Andy

Solid value and good experience

from Sport303 on 2003-12-08
The Royal Dublin wasn't spectacular, but it was a great value and a good stay. The location is perfect, not too far from the River Liffey and the Temple Bar area. There is also a tour bus stop very close by.

The breakfast is a good way to start a day on the town, and the bar is a great place to chat with fellow tourists after the pubs close.

When I go back to Dublin, I will definitely stay at the Royal Dublin again.

Great Stay and Great Value

from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-12-04
We stayed at the Royal Dublin for just one night off season in November - and found our room beautifully renovated in a modern style. It was spotless and comfortable. We found a great rate online ($85 Euros) including free parking (which I hear is rare). We were not able to take advantage of breakfast - but even so felt we got more than our money's worth. The location was very convenient although located on a very busy street. Still, noise was not an issue for us during our stay. Wish we had more time to stay there a few more nights and really get to see Dublin - but should we be back - The Royal Dublin will be the first place we'll look.

Sausages a Speciality

from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-09-19
After booking at the Royal Dublin, we read a very critical review of the hotel written by a couple from USA.Fortunately we decided not to cancel. Although the hotel is being re-furbished (like much of Dublin), we were lucky enough to be given an excellent room for our two-night stay.We arrived just as visitors from Cork and Kilkenny were starting to 'party' after the hurling final, but it was all friendly and colourful, if noisy, and in fact added to the holiday experience. The breakfasts were fine, with the sausages particularly tasty, and all the staff we dealt with were both helpful and friendly. Overall it ranks as one of the better hotels we have used, and by booking direct we were able to take advantage of a very reasonable rate charged.
