... cramped spaces and bags on laps, as well as a welcome glut of snack and toilet stops.

So we are now in Durban in another lovely guest house - where we plan to take in the sights, eat bunny chow (hollowed out loaves of bread filled with stew) and drink several martinis in the local bar's happy hour. Oh, and we are also picking up a car (before the martinis!) which we can't wait for!

A&Lx

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa michaelspikefI just got back from our second trip to a rural area, a place called Amatikulu. We were again paired up and assigned to homestay families, except this time we stayed with community health workers and spent our days shadowing them. The role of the community health workers is basically to visit people at their homes and educate them about different health issues-infant care, TB, HIV/AIDS, diarrhea, cholera, etc-and encourage them to go to ...
Durban, South Africa laurenharden... views of the gorge though. On the following Saturday, Maria and Lisbeth invited Thami and me to dinner at the house where they're each renting a room as the owner was out of town. In addition to the four of us, they also invited Ingrid, a Norwegian BSW student at UKZN; Julia, a French master's student in something pertaining to the weather; Nicolas, a French lecturer who's friends with Julia through her ...
Durban, South Africa rroesch... than 45 min. in both Glenwood (where I live) and Manor Gardens (where I work). The outages were started before I arrived, and there's no date set for when they will end. The business community has grown very frustrated. The mining companies had to stop their operations until they could be guaranteed that they would not be affected by the outages. Needless to say, everyone saves their ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa rroesch... chattering a bit. He used to be in a hospital for children with severe medical problems. I don't think that the home is the right place for him. The nurse at the hospital said that he usually had only one or two seizures a month at the hospital. He had one earlier this morning as well and has had them most days since arriving at the home. At the hospital, he was kept in a low stimulus environment. I think that ...
Durban, South Africa rroesch... From the hostel, we packed our things, and headed for the eastern coast. St. Lucia was our destination. It is a small coastal town on the east shore of South Africa. After a day of hiking and a four hour drive, we were exhausted. Right to bed we went upon arrival in St. Lucia. We woke in the morning and went on a lovely nature hike. St. Lucia is home to a rare ecosystem. There is a large lake on one side of the town and the Indian Ocean is on the other ...
Durban, South Africa pmyersAfter Mozambique and Swaziland I went back into South Africa and stayed in St Lucia for a few days. It was really nice there, the sun was shining and there was a lot going on. I'm now heading into more 'surfer' territory so there are more shops for me to be tempted by!
In St Lucia I went to the beach, hitched a lift to Cape Vidal (the local holiday spot with great snorkelling), saw hippos roaming the streets at night (not something I can say I think I'll ever ...
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa vickicooper... this around his neck and just wondered what the hell happened last night. We ended up the night getting a cab back to our hostel (110 Rand.. ouch). The cost was justified in the fact that the cabbie and I sang "That's What Friends Are For" at the top of our lungs for the 25 minute ride. It was almost as good as Joe Piscapo and Eddie Murphy singing "Ebony and Ivory". Kelly and I also went to a market in Durban called the Victoria Street Market. It's on Victoria ...
