There is yet another fair in Basel right now, the Herbstmesse (Autumn Fair). It is huge! Carnival rides, food stalls, and booths selling trinkets are spread throughout the city. We got back in Basel late yesterday afternoon. We had lots of time to sort out our luggage and for mom and dad to repack for their journey today. Today it was time to say good-bye. They are driving back to Paris and flying home midday tomorrow. I had parked their rental car in an underground garage right by my apartment. ... with costumes and masks and bands. Damn near froze standing still for that long, but I had a good vantage point for the pictures so I wasn't going to move for fear of losing my spot. After the parade we got stuck into the gluhwein and some hot food then went back to the hostel for a hot shower, then out for dinner. We went to a local brewery that had a restaurant incorporated and had such a good time that we made it a regular while we were there.

... in warmer weather the picturesque riverbanks provide the perfect spot to picnic on the goodies you picked up at the market. In the summer, many of the locals take their trunks and swimsuits to work and have a quick dip in their lunch hour!
