Rome November 2009

... records of the burials lost. It was common during the centuries, as it is today, to unearth spectacular intact Greek and Roman artifacts, like the Laocoon sculpture, commissioned and transported to Rome from Rhodes in the 1st century BC, but lost for centuries under Nero’s Golden House. Its discovery in 1506 became a sensation involving Pope Julius II ("Il Papa Terrible" for his bad temperament), Michaelangelo, Raphael ...

... work. A very clever man, he did not like bossy Pope Sixtus IV and hid his work for 4 years while it was completed. To a different plan of course. Ever the practical joker the evidence inside the painting confirms that Mikie and the Pope du jour did not get on at all. It is said that the face of the Prophet ...

Rome (Part 1)

... She took it back to the hotel and it became a nice piece of garbage when we checked out. After a good night's sleep, we had breakfast at the rooftop terrace in the hotel. They had a nice little spread and the food was good. We then met our driver for the day, Andreas. As we found throughout the time we were in Rome, the guys from Rome Cabs were always right on time. Andreas took a scenic route from the hotel to get ...

Rome in 14 hours

... us) and we had to stay in a subpar hotel in a terrible Roman neighbourhood. And it has only been 24 hours of travelling. We're both really looking forward to Egypt as it has been a top destination for us for years. We don't really know what to expect as it our first time to the Middle East and North Africa. We'll have to redo our "Top Ten" list after we get back to Madrid. We're already thinking India will now be at the top.

Day 24

... omelets with green peppers, onions, and tomatoes. I usually don't like peppers and onions, but I didn't mind it this time. I was chef boyarshanae' and made the French toast. The bad news was we had no cinnamon, vanilla, or syrup, so we used a little bit of orange juices and then I replace syrup with Nutella! Always a good choice, then added some powdered sugar on ...

Not much happening in life

... unexpected, unparalleled, and passionate love for me. I'm a really big sucker- I mean I don't fall for it, because I don't love him. But, he was basically a good guy, and I feel really bad that he is going to be hurt- not bad enough to do something stupid, but I have some definite pangs of conscience. Well... he also has to tell me that I should be afraid for him (what he means is of him) because he then says if I try to leave him he'll ...

... Hungarian Empire but after WW1 it was given over to Italy. When the population wanted the town returned to Serbia, Italy resisted and even went as far as banning Serbian language and newspapers and forcing Serbians to take Italian names. After WW2 the town was run by the Americans and British until 1954 when it has handed back to Italy. The town was a lot quieter than the other large Italian towns but the beaches near the town were crowded. I checked into a youth hostel and that evening ...

20th May 2000 Driving Positano to Assisi

We departed the next morning very anxious about driving on the motorway. This was to be our first experience of the A1, and in particular, I figured if we were to encounter fast and furious traffic anywhere in Italy, it must be between Napoli, Rome and Firenze. Turned out to be an anti-climax. With sound advise from the manager at the pensione, we didn't bother to drive down the Amalfi coast to the motorway. We just ran 10km back out the peninsular, then up ...

Colosseum, Palantine Hill and the Roman Forum

... Palatine Hill. Its quite interesting up here. Some very old houses/buildings, a hippodrome and some aviaries. By the time I wandered around here for a bit I was getting tired so sat down near the Colosseum and watched the roller blading race that was going on in the streets. There was a massive stack right in front of me which looked like it would have hurt! After another meal of pasta I crashed for about 12 hours..
