... I was there for the last day of the Barcolana
Regatta, a two weekend long sailing festival. That would explain why I could
not find any accommodation for Saturday night in Trieste while there was plenty
available for Sunday night. This being Italy any festival also becomes a
festival of food and wine and music as well as the main purpose, and the
waterfront was lined with booths selling all kinds of Italian products and very

blah-blah took a political turn after all that beer and complimentary bitter
after-dinner liqueurs. Nigel, the father, was a real live committed British
socialist. I don’t think I’ve ever met one of those before – Labor supporters
and left-leaning thinkers, yes, but strong ideological socialists, no. Needless
to say, the political conversation lasted well into the night, wrecking my
plans for getting an early start in the morning.

After filling up on free samples, though, I decided to buy a portion of the cooking demonstration’s creation of gnocchi in boletus mushroom sauce. It was fantastic and far better in both flavor and value than my restaurant truffle dishes the night before.
