The service in all the cafés and restaurants is quick but not pushy, people joke and laugh. What a difference a day can make! As it was so hot, we had ice creams early in the afternoon, and then ice lollies later one. At that point they were really ...

... a banya (ok, relatable) and ends up accidentally catching a flight to St Petersburg and falls in love with the girl who owns the flat of the same address, which he breaks into thinking it's his (the joke being that Soviet architecture wasn't very imaginative so the same flats, with the same locks in the same streets were built in every city). I would come to agree with this more and more later on with every new city along the railway, that did begin to run into one another.
