After the excesses of Suzdal, Nizhny Novgorod was a beautiful setting to have a couple of days relaxing by the almighty Volga. I spent two days wandering the streets and through the beauitful Kremlin in the sun, stopping off in cafes and bars every so often to read David Walsh's most recent book on Lance Armstrong "Seven Deadly Sins" as I was on the second half and couldn't wait for the comeuppance. Stayed in Smile hostel which I would highly recommend, brand new, curtains ...

Vladimir to Gorki, that's how this city was called until 1990. Today's name is much harder to spell as you can see on the map.

As we approached the main plaza, thousands of people suddenly appeared. The crowd extended for at least a kilometer. ...

Our train to Perm departed in the evening so we checked out of the hostel at the last minute around noon. We spent the day exploring other parts of the city. We walked to the water and up to the kremlin then made our way back to the hostel to the pickup our bags and head to the station. We boarded the train and found our копе berth, otherwise known as second class having 4 bunks per berth. As we ...

Where the Volga and Oka Meet

A travel blog entry by timthelibrarian on Sep 16, 2013

... The train pulled in to Nizhny Novgorod at 10:14. Thankfully it wasn't raining as I then walked to the Kremlin after dropping my pack in the left luggage room. It was a further distance than what it appeared on the map and it ended up taking me an hour to get there. But I had plenty of time to kill. On the way I had my first view of the mighty Volga river. Nizhny Novgorod was built at the confluence of the Volga ...
