Snowing heavily when I arrived in St Petersburg, got a taxi. The traffic was, to put it mildly, horrific. Took over an hour to get to the hotel, really not very far, but it was very reminiscent of traffic in inner Paris. Taxi driver was great. He asked for 100 rubles less than originally stated. Perhaps felt bad about ripping me off badly. No …

We stopped at the pale blue Russian Orthodox church – Kazan Cathedral. It was modeled after St. Peter’s in Rome. Then drove on to Pushkin (15 miles south of St. Petersburg) to see Catherine’s palace with the breathtaking amber room.
We enjoyed the group lunch in a restaurant that also housed a spa. There were many wedding parties getting photographed around town, multi photo shoots for each wedding ...

On Friday, we finished up our course with a tour of the museum of the defense and siege of Leningrad. For those of you who don't know, during World War II, St Petersburg was surrounded by Nazi forces within two weeks of the German's declaration of war towards Russia. The onion domes on the cathedrals are fabulous ...

I LOVED the hotel.. but the restaurant was a rip-off with surly service...
The room was really nice, original, good hot water (important), free wi-fi that worked well (equally important). Careful about taking advice about restaurants from the staff - the one I was recommended locally was either closed or closed-down!
So, the restaurant on the other hand was a rip-off (I hadn't intended to eat there, as you can see above, but...), with surly service, ok food, and really really pricey.
