Paradise- finally

... Thanks again Meg and Kim for all of that helpful information about Bequia. We then headed down to the local street market and picked up some fresh fruits from Sunshine. Sunshine was very entertaining.

We still had not stepped foot on the beach.

We finally headed to the beach, which was just 50 steps from our front door, and it was absolutely amazing. The views, foliage, and water were incredible. Words and pictures can't ...

Bequai to St Vincent (the main Grenadine island) was via the regular ferry service – through very rough waters – every muscle was tensed to hang on and keep the status quo! Charlie met us on arrival and we went to the hotel (Beachcomber) to meet up with Jo, and Ben and Clair.

We were taken in a minibus along the coast and up into the interior for the volcano trek. No checks had been made as to our fitness/ability etc. and the climb was ...

The trouble with doing nothing

... When Kevin told us that he would provide free water taxi service the deal was cinched. We mentioned that we were a bit short of EC (moolah) and he said it wouldn't be a problem; we could pay the next day after we took the bus into town to find an ATM. He picked us up at 17:30 (5:30). Our first stop was for sundowners on his bar boat. Along with the bartender, there were two other local men. Mitchell was a talker. He was a 25 year ...

Welcome to Paradise

... gusty and the water is very deep. They weren't kidding! We were happy for the boat boy who met us as we came to the area between the two Pitons. The wind was howling with gusts to 30 knots, but we were able to get attached to the buoy with his help. We triple tied ourselves to the mooring buoy before we felt secure. This area is a marine reserve in the shadows of the Gros Piton (2521 feet) and Petit Piton Mountains (2460 feet). We took the dinghy into to nearby town of ...

Day 2 - Mustique to Canouan

... since it worked better in salt water. Who knew? That said, we all had a great time. After busy afternoons of snorkeling or relaxing afternoons of lying on the beach, we cooked onboard most days - tonight's burger night was actually quite good. Afterward, on nearly every island there was a beachfront bar we could go to, where we had Hiroun beers, Mount Gay rum, and lots of rum punch.

... to speak of. Tied up to very tall jetty. Small but interesting whale rendering station. Terrible stench. Huge boiling vats filled with garbage. Some old Boston whalers. Place incredibly messy. Apparently, base is still in use. Paul and I returned to let Pas come ashore. Didn't stay for too long. Irish ketch came in and anchored before we left. Comfortable sail ...

Back to Tobago Cays

... Witnessed first two landing parties from ship but then decided to leave. Hoisted anchor and sailed perfectly out of bay (might as well give them their money's worth). Motor-sail to Tobago Cays. Set hooks. Ate pineapple. Went beach-walking while Paul and Sue snorkeled. Crossed island in barefeet. No fer-de-lances (whew). Nothing much on either side. Returned to boat. Afternoon, evening spent relaxing, reading. Cheesecake for afters. A couple of very brief rain showers before bedtime.

to Mayreau

Stormy. Windy. Left early for Mayreau. Long sail, but lots of fun. Gusty, mon. Decided to settle into Salt Whistle Bay. Very crowded. Swam to beach. Walked along windward side. Very nice beach, lots of surf. Watched a fisherman not catch anything. On leeward side, did aerials, flip-flops. Swam back. Sue jumped off boat into water doing split jumps, etc. Turned out to be a very rolly night.

... 15 knots, low seas. St. Vincent also proved to be a lush, volcanic island, covered with coconut palms. Kingston, the capital, is a large port by eastern Caribbean standards) so we avoided it. The passage to Bequia turned out to be much rougher and windier. We had to motor during most of mine and Sue's watches coming down St. Vincent, as we were in the lee of the island. In mid-pm, we shook out a reef. The extra speed was necessary to due a) the long voyage; b) the salesmen rowing ...
