... wanted but got sent to the Malaria Camp. At long last we were able to get some malaria drugs for Mike. On talking to them they suggested we do not use mefloquine but instead gave us a couple of courses of tablets to be used in case we got malaria. As this is a specialist clinic we took their word for it and gladly accepted the tablets. Now it was back to get the tourist information, here we wanted to go to a ranch where they look after orphaned giant river otters; we were advised that ...
Georgetown, Guyana mikeandmary... to jump into the swimming pool below. When you finally wake up in ER you've still got visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. Okay, I exaggerate, but you get the idea. I can't exactly 'hold my liquor', though I never get *********d. I just stop. What's so great about 'holding' it anyway? If you can 'hold' it, then why not just forego it? Getting a buzz is the idea, right? Actually all was fine until I got gout. That hurts like hell ...
Georgetown, Guyana hardiek... closed, WorldTeach volunteers had a meeting with ministry officials, and I did not hesitate to tell them about students breaking furniture everyday to hit each other with, how two boys hung a third out of the window, and when they finally pulled him back in, he was so terrified his eyes were red, trying to catch his breath while the teacher yelled at him and not the two boys who actually hung him out of the window, saying that he should have called out, but ...
Grove, Guyana sallywattie... trouble, and as a result we met many of the amazingly friendly locals who were very keen to show us around their small, and charming city. We went to the Zoo, to the sea wall, and we headed out in the evenings for some drinks and to play pool on Sherriff Street. We even took a taxi through the infamous Tiger Bay area to see what all the fuss was about - the dilapidated warehouses and wastelands of this run-down port neighbourhood certainly lent ...
Georgetown, Guyana olimoss... gave my students a larger project on Conservation and Biodiversity-with focus on the tropical rainforest. I was so excited to teach and talk with them about this topic, and I really think they enjoyed it and could relate to and comprehend the material. Sometimes it's interesting because although they live here in Guyana, they don ...
Friendship, Guyana jaime.hurlbut... Georgetown normally leaves around 4:00). Fortunately, one of the guys we were hanging out with happened to be the owner of a few of the speedboats that travel to and from Georgetown-he held back a boat for us to get back to town. It was dusk as we boarded the boat. The river is over a mile wide in some parts and between the colors of sunset and the dense, lush jungle that bordered both shores, the view was quite beautiful. As ...
Bartica, Guyana leobeckI went to the zoo the other day. It is a small zoo attached to the botanical gardens-the same place where I saw the manatees. The majority of the animals are birds: parrots, macaws, cranes, and even a few eagles (you can see the photo of me with a very large eagle). As you progress into the zoo you will pass by snakes (such as the infamous White Rasta eating anaconda), caimans ...
Georgetown, Guyana leobeck... would help too. To bring something or carry something with you, use the term "walk with." We might say "did he bring the documents I requested?" while the Guyanese way lingo would be "did he walk with documents I tell he to bring?" For now, class dismissed. I hope you have all learned a little and will put this valuable, potentially life saving information to good use during your next trip to Guyana.
Georgetown, Guyana leobeck... I had a day to relax and adjust. For those of you who don't know why I am here in the Caribbean, I mean South America, I will let you know. First a little recap on Guyana. Guyana was formerly a British colony-a sugar cane colony and is well known in the UK for Demerara sugar (Demerara is the main river). Those of us in the US probably remember it for Jim Jones-the leader of the cult which committed mass suicide in their Guyanese jungle compound. While geographically part of South ...
Georgetown, Guyana leobeck... 3-2 against Trinidad & Tobago. It was so neat to be in the stadium, they love their football here. At the end of the game I was able to go out onto the field and walk around, so plenty of pictures were taken. After that we walked over to the Botanical Gardens, and it was so pretty, the sun was setting behind all the palm trees, and there were so many birds, just beautiful, I will have to go back earlier on in the day to get the full ...
