... few pinchos and glasses of wine. It is the favorite pastime of Bilbaoans on a Friday night. In fact, it’s 10pm and they action is just starting….but we’re settling in for bed. We’ve just been blown away by the food this time around. In the past our gastronomic experience was less than stellar. I think we just hadn’t gone to the right places. The feature tonight was a duck ...
Bilbao, Basque, Spain and Canary Islands sinfronterasWe drove from Madrid, got a bit lost trying to find Lurdea. We thought it is a name of a village but it is not it is just the name of the Hotel/Casa Rural.
The place is amazing. Located in the hills above Bermeo, with magnificent view of the ocean. It is clean (like really clean) and has the air of a relaxing boutique hotel.

Stopped over in a basement apartment in the autonomous region of Basque spain [since 1985] We learned a lot from our wonderful hosts and shared a wonderful dinner of meats cheese and pasta. I hope we have opportunity to revisit Mariacruz and her lovely family as they have invited us into their cottage in the Basque mountains-it is however at least 10 hr drive from here to Lisbon!
Bilbao, Basque, Spain and Canary Islands hollingers... somewhere you want to stay. True is relatively near the tube into the city (a cab ride of about £5) but it's not worth it. We left and didn't pay for the night we stayed there (I'm not sorry).
We also came to the conclusion that we needed a car so hired one to drive us to San Seb. Spent a another day in Bilbao seeing the obvious Guggenheim.
... ourselves on the other side of the bridge with some ice cream (and by the way we've tried three ice cream places in seach of something close to what we had in San Sebastian and it hasn't even come close to how good that was!). Then a nice long typical Spanish early evening walk before we took the cable car back across the bridge. Back to our car, and the back home to Pie de Concha. A tiring, but wonderul five days of fun, but ready to go REST. On the way home, I ...
Bilbao, Basque, Spain and Canary Islands styrsky... an hour. We then tried the metro again, but it still wasn't running. We finally got a taxi, and I made it home at 8:40 am. That was an adventurous and very cold night. I never want to be put in that position again. (Oh, and some people made it on the last metro before it officially close. They are so enjoying this....) That left Sunday-which needless to say was a resting day for the most part. I also found out NOTHING is ...
Bilbao, Spain kkwardBilboa is a pretty interesting town that, like other parts of Spain, has its own language that is not spanish. Nothing too exciting to report besides that we went to the Guggenheim and 3/4 of it was closed and that the day after we left the ETA bombed the post office.
Bilbao, Spain sant2003... we wandered the streets trying to figure it out but in the end just went in and tried our best. We eventually got around it with what little Spanish we know. It is so completely different here, it is hardly Western and reminds me more of Hungary. It is completely different to any other culture that I´ve witnessed and is a tad daunting but hopefully, we will ease into it with soon.
