Assisi Off to the Basilica of St Francis for mass in English. We get there early and have time to go and ask for a Mass to be said for the Quirk Family. Mass is downstairs under the Basilica and we are there ten minutes before 9 so we get a seat. Nuns abound in the congregation, we get two in our seat. The organ starts on cue just before mass is due to begin, the stage is set for a beautiful experience. The ceiling is cross vaulted, decorated ...

... teachers wandered into the piazza. Followed shortly after by civic officials, flags, banner and wreaths.

As luck would have it, just outside the hairdressers, there is a plague erected on the wall, commemorating "Panicale's fallen" during First and Second World Wars

When the officials arrived they all gathered in front of this plague, right outside the hairdresser's!

... not a soul in sight. Not a shop open. Not a cat. NOBODY!!!! Can you image.....an entire town closed????

Next day we choofed off to claim our miracles from Saint Frances of Assisi, who founded the Franciscan Religious Order in the town in 1208. He is know as the patron Saint of Animals and the Environment. Another mountain side medieval town, also fascinating. Loads of walking, Paul went up the Fortress tower - and a walk through the streets and shops. Had a spritz in ...
