I spent two weeks in late September in Toblach, a small town in the Dolomitic region of northern Italy. ... was also an old hut that the workers that built the road had lived in and a memorial to those that had died during the construction. The tunnel at the top had icicles in it from water that had been dripping. At 5.00 pm it was 1.5C.
We stayed the night just at the bottom of the road in a car park as it was starting to get dark.
... worse my eyes were now running like streams due to the cold air and I just could not see where I was going at times!
Finally I made it back to base and was back on the main road over the pass. Unlike the cobbles at least this road was black and had white lines on it for one to follow.
