First night in Altstätten was a quiet affair at home with Marco and Stephie. We had arrived in the afternoon in the middle of their kids getting home from soccer camp, chucking things in bags and taking off with various friends for sleepovers. ... blue sky was showing Monday morning, so we hiked down the hill to the old town of Meersburg, a quaint old town on the lake. There are outdoor cafés all along the water front, as well as scattered in between little shops. We took the boat - there seems to be a boat to take you anywhere on all European lakes- to the garden island on Mainau. We had a lot of people come to speak to us about the van, including some real life (to us) cowboys!
We left the site and visited Ottenbeuren on the way out, we had been told by a local to go see the Monastery, it was an impressive building - one of the largest in Germany... She also recommended some other places to visit but we will come to them next..
... ended the evening with a nice dinner at a place called Lokremise.. a circular building that was formerly a locomotive repair shop, now a bar, restaurant, theatre and outdoor cinema. Very cool. Sunday , after sleeping in a little longer than Nina had planned, we headed to the town of Appenzell to meet up with a colleague of Nina's for a hike up to the Aescher Hotel and Restaurant .. a destination point ...
