We had a large apartment to ourselves, much more like long-term living accommodation than a tourists' stop, with a large double bedroom, lounge with all of the mod cons, a well-stocked kitchen-diner - and a lovely bathroom with a circular plunge bath! We were thrilled - and even more so by the views from the flat: of the central Neumarkt square, with the large Frauenkirche dominating the square. It was great.

... is somewhat surprising, considering the hammering it received during WWII - particularly on Kristallnacht.

The city is a mix of very modern development and new shopping malls and shops along with the 15th And 16th century historic buildings and cobblestone streets.

We continued to check out the town until 7:30 when our bodies ran out of fuel. Before heading to bed, we shared a bottle of Reisling in the room and toasted the city if Dresden.

... they had not decided to rebuild the Altstadt in this way. It is beautiful, but in some ways I think it is fake and even means forgetting (or down playing?) their dark history by rebuilding everything so it looks the same as it did before. They could have rebuilt things in a more modern, bright and refreshed way, whilst still paying homage to their history, and giving more meaning to the few buildings that did survive the war and bombings. But perhaps this would be fake too. ...
