Assisi Off to the Basilica of St Francis for mass in English. We get there early and have time to go and ask for a Mass to be said for the Quirk Family. ... the Church (otherwise, the materials were just torn apart and used for new-builds). We sat on the steps of the temple/church and marvelled at how many people over the last couple thousand years had sat on the same steps, leaned against the same pillars and had similar discussions about life, history and politics as those who sat there with us.

Despite the prevalence of souvenir shops and tourist groups (haven't seen that many ...

Yesterday morning we rented a car and drove through the rolling hills of Tuscany into Umbria and the charming town of Assisi. In the year 1200, a simple friar from Assisi countered the decadence of Church government, and society in general, with a powerful message of non-materialism. Francis forsook his wealthy family and taught by example, living a life without worldly goods and aiming to love all ...
