Today was a day of varied scenery and temperature. At one point we were 3535 metres high, cold and windy. At another point we were staring into the deep gorges of the mountainside, dusty and damp from the long stretches of road construction. We passed a couple of tanks on the side of a cliff, a sobering reminder of the war that wasn't so long ago. We drove deep into the Lasta Mountains, known as "Africa's Petra", and the last 14 km into Lalibela were the most awe-inspiring with stunning mount...
Lalibela, Ethiopia bonthornLalibela's 11 rock-hewn churches are unbelievable. You really have to see it with your own eyes to believe it even exists. Lalibela ranks as one of the world's greatest religious historical sites in the Christian world and has earned a UNESCO Heritage badge. To protect most of the churches from the sun and rain, a scaffolding and roof have been built above them. Not only does this place draw foreign tourists and TV producers worldwide (there is a Canadian team from Quebec here now filming a c...
Her er nemlig 11 kirker ...
Lalibela, Ethiopia gunvorvThe propellers whirred into action in the old creaky Ethiopian Air Fokker on flight ET126 Addis Ababa to Lalibela and after months of planning and preparation it finally feels like our 2007 adventure has begun. We had experienced a grueling day before, leaving Perth at 3.55am and not reaching our final destination for the day of Addis Ababa until 24 hours later - sans luggage! To date we still do not have our luggage but thats a whole story in itself. Our Sunday flight is taking us to Lalibel...

Lalibela was definitely one of the
highlights of our trip to Ethiopia. Lalibela itself is a small
mountain town but it is home to 11 incredible medieval rock-hewn
churches that were built by chiseling away at a massive pieces of
volcanic rock. Apparently King Lalibela wanted to replicate and
build the Holy Land in ...
Lalibela, Ethiopia asalvaire... buildings surrounded by the remaining rock they originated from. Bet Giyorgis ("Place of George" - named after the patron saint of Ethiopia) is without doubt the most spectacular of all the churches and clearly shows the architecture of the churches. While sipping macchiatos one afternoon the waitress invited us to a coffee ceremony the following evening. This is a ritual for celebrating coffee and an example of Ethiopian hospitality. We ...
Lalibela, Ethiopia jeneggener... What the hell does that mean? Can't they fly in the dark? And that's all the announcement says! Everyone is mingling around - lost, confused, scared. The white-man is running and ranting at anyone he can find. Totally perplexed, we're trying to communicate with airline staff who don't speak English. We're told that we need to speak to an 'agent in green', but he is conveniently no where to be found! We start scouting around looking ...
Lalibela, Ethiopia 2totango... family. I thought of buying them a coffee ceremony set at the gift shop, but I didn't know how that would be received. Speaking with Krista, she was also greatly touched by this family and wanted to do something as well. After much discussion we thought that dinner would be a good idea. So down to the restaurant we tried to make our desires known: traditional Ethiopian food for our friends down the road! It took quite a bit of ...
Lalibela, Ethiopia 2totango... Our little mini-bus had quite the time. Since no one has a vehicle, the few that are on the road take as many riders as they can fit. We've seen more living huts than anywhere else thus far - some were even 2 stories! This area, even more than Aksum is greatly awaiting the rains. There is almost no water present. Kindly, our hotel provided us with a bucket filled with water in our room as there are none to be had ...
