The cruise- an epic saga PART 1
... t accustomed to the menu ordering system. We got a lovely 7 course menu with 3 options to choose from each course. Thinking we had to order every course we all stuffed ourselves while looking around watching the regular cruisers eating maybe 3 or 4 of the 7. Oops. It was a delicious mistake. (The next night we cut back a bit) We were assigned a table number and waiter that stay the same all week. (You also have the option to eat at the buffet, or reserve and pay for a meal at ...
Mystra, Kalamata & Birthplace of the Olympic Games
14 OCTOBER 2012 - (Cont’d) - We drive to Sparta and then to Mystra. We check out the Byzantine city of Mystra which is built on a side of a cliff with a fort and ancient monastries. Mary ends up waiting for Troy at the entrance and he continues to explore. He went up to the monastry where the sign says “All people must wear a skirt”, so Troy starts putting one on and the nuns say “no no no no”......! Funny!

We boarded the train for the ride to the village of Olympia. It took about 35 minutes. Lots of olive trees along the way. We stopped in several villages. The ...

It was a relaxing last port day as we did lots of walking and shopping! We were able to enjoy one last Greek meal on the waterfront before heading back to the ship......more saganaki and gyros! Kristen and I did walk to the beach where we spent an hour enjoying a Greek beer, which tasted suspiciously like Old Milwaukee! This was a ...
Private Olympics
... Some amazingly complete pediments and metopes (pediments are the triangular bits on the ends, and metopes are the rectangular ones down the sides) were displayed in the central hall, complete with descriptions of what they represent. Alas you cannot pose with any of the artefacts (to preserve their dignity) but I got some great photos all the same. I liked Olympia, but maybe not the ruins-to-end-all-ruins that I’d thought it would ...
