... desolate.

Mina was almost a ghost town - I think the "Desert Lobster Cafe" was still operating. There was a stretch limo outside; it looked quite out of place.

We ended up having Maccas at Hawthorne. This is an army town with lots of barracks and heaps of underground bunkers. The army made 'ordinances' here - so I guess they tested them. This is one I need to google. After this, we drove alongside Walker Lake. There was ...

... we're off to our next destination, Carson City where we'll spend a full week and investigate the area as well as check out records for Lynn's 2Grandfather's time here. As I mentioned before, he came from Wales to Massachusetts and found his way here where he worked as a silver miner at the Comstock Mine in Virginia City, Nevada.

We made it easily to Carson and got set up in a great site at the end ...

... a Hispanic looking man washing several huge loads of clothes, like 15 comforters, so I think he worked there but he wouldn't make eye contact with me. This was the nearest laundromat according to the GPS but not a great neighborhood. Bud came in to tell me that Larry said to bring the clothes to their house to dry. He didn't stay but a few seconds because he didn't want to leave the truck untended.

... the saloon we visited several gift shops and stumbled upon the “Mormon Station State Historical Park”, a recreation of the first building in the area, where we had a very nice conversation with the museum director who gave us a lot of good historical information on the area. After dinner we returned to the casino for some more slot action, where Valerie had anothergood night.


John's Birthday in Nevada

... sang "Happy Birthday" to him. That was a delightful surprise.

Dinner was at the Sassafras Restaurant. We shared a table with Chris from Hawaii and Edna and Patricia from New Jersey. It was an excellent meal with clam chowder, roast pork, salmon and scalloped potatoes. I especially loved the Thai salad dressing and the brownie sundae.
