          ... derricks, we encountered a thick dust storm blown up by the strong winds. It was so dry and uncomfortable Ana managed a bloody nose. The sun set in the haze. We passed the city of Bakersfield and continued east out of the valley, over a few mountains, and into the Mojave Desert. This is the hottest place in America by far, but tonight wasn't too bad.           ... we noticed the price of gas had jumped appx. 30-50 cents/gallon. We have averaged around $3.80/gallon premium since starting the trip, and today when filing up outside Bakersfield, I paid $4.19/gal. I'm sure this would have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that California is run by Dems and the state is bankrupt. So far, very little hiway construction observed in the far left state.
