South Italy-My holiday in Calabria, Tropea

... my car and started my journey to the famous coastal town of Tropea, only a1 hour drive in southern direction.

Tropea stands on an imposing sandstone cliff, in a charming position. It is an exclusive seaside resort with a modern tourist and fishing harbor and is one of the prettiest and best preserved historical town centers in Calabria.
This lively small coast town also called "Saint Tropez" of the south, has a magnificent medieval ...

... of teenage girls sitting in their chairs outside their homes doing lacework just chatting away and we couldn't help but comment about how young they were. We expected to see older ladies sitting there doing that, but we suspect tradition is fully imbued in their normal daily activities in San Giorgio. We walked all of the way up to the medieval castle at the top of the town and noticed an incredible amount of construction work. It seems as ...

... ferry and it will delay us too long to stay another day, so we push on to the Gargano, which is like a big growth on the back of the calf of Italy (look at the map and you will see what I mean). We drive along these beautiful but interminably windy roads and eventually arrive at Vieste, the main town. In the morning we sally forth and nearby we see these beautiful white cliffs, and faraglione (rocky vertical outcrops in the sea). We take a cruise along the coast, which has ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

... times. Of course we were curious to see this place as it was all very matter of fact. So up we went, and found a beautiful site overlooking the country and sea with an open air church and two fenced in squares stating the exact dates when Jesus appeared there. Very unusual and for me very strange and rather funny - I can't imagine ever seeing a sign like that in Australia that's for sure!

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... search we stopped off at a gas station to ask for directions. The directions that Danielle managed to piece together pointed us in the direction north of the city and off we went, we did manage to find a hotel, but it was not the La Praia. One turn led to another and soon we found ourselves in the heart of the old streets of Tropea, barely wide enough for our small Ford Festiva to fit in. At one point we stopped ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more

... view of the town (you can see the ocean from the front), Brought some REALLY cheap clothes and went back to the train station. Stopped at a fruit shop to buy a nectarine and the guy was so surprised I only wanted one so he gave it to me for free! We got to the train station and waited.... and waited..... and no train. We were getting slightly panicky being stuck 30min by train from our hotel and having no transport when arrived the only person in Calabria who can speak english and ...
