... hour) flight. Was able to sleep for a few hours on the plane. It was a pretty cramped space, but I survived! Was in a row with two people from S Africa that had been touring in London.
It was very cold in JoBurg (that's how they refer to it here)! But the cold helped me stay awake.
... like language spoken by the ruling party. The students left the school that day to march in the streets and were fired on by the police, whether the students through rocks at the police or not will probably never be known for sure. Never the less a number of students were hit by gunfire and some were killed. A photo of ...
Jonannesburg, South Africa nando64Our last morning on Nellie (our truck) started with a 6am leaving the campground..... Not surprisingly we managed to sleep most of the morning! At about 11ish we pulled up in a service station to the sight of another Absolute truck. 7 of us got off Nellie and onto our new transport, and after more goodbyes we were off in a different direction to the others. We ...
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa kyliebruce... and very cute - says Alyssa =D) So we all talked for a while as we were waiting for the plane to land. When we got off the plane, we said goodbye to Louis and he shook my hand and kissed Alyssa on the cheek!!! I told her she was grounded forever for that. A driver named Tomas was waiting patiently for us at the airport when we finally got through Customs. He had a nice new Mercedes waiting for us and drove us to our hotel, The Westcliff, for the ...
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa sbarone... of the nation's psyche. In all reality, it will probably take another generation to heal the wounds and to provide real integration amongst races and classes. In the mean time, the most pressing issue on the horizon for the country, is the AIDS crisis. Hopefully, Zuma will be more progressive on this subject that Mbeki. That's it for now... I hope that you have enjoyed this trip as much as I have. Thanks again for coming along with me! Ari
Johannesburg, South Africa jazzkat6... find an areana and a big Coca-Cola Dome tent? After 30 minutes spent sitting in the University car park trying to find the damn R28 on the map, I drove back to the office. Internet. Google. Maps. Nothing. Dive Show webiste - check directions. Correct. Nothing on the map. 'Contact Us' button. Phone number. Dial. Answer. 'Take the N1' Damn the N1. I hate the N1. I hate most things about the Gauteng highways. If trees aren't obscuring the signs, the names have changed and the ...
Randburg, South Africa off_road_clara... We saw a bunch of other significant Apartheid sights as well as peeking in on the current homes of Winnie and Nelson Mandela. It was a pretty packed day of sightseeing and we saw a lot of different things, both good and bad about Joburg. In the evening we got together at an African-themed restaurant with a bunch of Steve's co-workers who were all anxious to meet me and Sora.
Johannesburg, South Africa lingchickA long day on the truck. We stopped at a roadside cafe called Ronnie's Sex Shop. Michelle told us the story behind the name. It seems that Ronnie opened this café more or less in the middle of nowhere and called it Ronnie's Shop. One night his buddies came along and painted Sex on the sign and it became Ronnie's Sex Shop and soon was a famous stopping place on the ...
Stellenbosch, South Africa pachi... over for dinner Thursday evening and we had a great time talking about South Africa and the future of the Church here. This is early Friday morning and Bill will take us to the airport as we continue on to Malawi. Not sure what our Internet connectivity will be, but keep checking back with the blog. We will be logging our daily experiences and will upload them as we get to the Internet locations. We are excited about being with the Churches in Africa again.
Johannesburg, South Africa victorkubik... bought the safari we decided that we need some extra clothes for the trip, along with a pair of sandals. We bought all the stuff within 20 minutes in a shopping mall, and once again everything was dirt-cheap. When we came back to the house we had a "braai", this is the South African equivalent of a barbecue. We had steaks, a type of SA sausage... I didn't ask where it came from, for my own safety. And we drank beer. A good night was had by all.
