My arrival in KSA

... locked to the Orange mobile network. I asked around if I could get it unlocked there and I was given the usual, ‘Inshallah, come back tomorrow’. With my new means of communication, I sent messages to everyone with my new number. If there’s anything I’ve learnt about being abroad far from loved ones, it’s that they want to be able to contact you at a moment’s notice. I returned home at about 1am after buying some water. I slept soundly until ...

Time to head home.

... to repeat it several times. After visiting the "watercloset" we went to the abutions area to perform wudu'. My 4 year old daughter sat and played in the water and gave a constant commentary ("Mommy, this water is hot! Why is the water hose pink? What is that in the drain? Can I put soap on my nose? Can I clean the drain? Yuck, this soap tastes terrible!") while I finished my ablutions, and when I turned I saw that there was an entire half-circle of ...

Outside Riyadh

When you are entering Riyadh from the east, you pass a lot of agricultural spots -- date farms, dairy farms, fields with modern irrigation equipment. Leaving the city heading west it's as if you have come to the edge of a vast cliff and are now headed down into an enormous valley. Our ears ...

Overnight in Riyadh

We reached Riyadh close to midnight. My husband's aunt's (by marriage) brother lives in Riyadh, and we usually sleep at their villa and have a meal before heading out again for the longer segment of our journey. Riyadh is a huge city; unfortunately it has only been a stopover point for us, we haven't had the opportunity to spend much time exploring.

After dinner and a night's rest we left, making a short stop at Starbucks for a Frappucino. I ...

Starting work

... ventilated, do go straight to ICU, but often we look after ICU "stepdown" patients in recovery before sending them on. I've seen some pretty interesting stuff already - a few MVA's and a partial liver donor this week. Its just taking some getting used to, with all the damn paperwork (so, so much paperwork!) and also their way of doing things. You can't even do the simplest thing such as apply oxygen without a doctor's order! Patients who have a motor block ...

Settling in to life in Saudi

... be! So a quiet house it shall be for the next 3 weeks, inshallah. It has been getting steadily hotter here as the time moves on, 44 degrees most of this week, and it doesn't cool down all that much at night, but I seem to be getting used to it. I'll probably start complaining that its cold when the temp starts to drop back to the 30's! :p Anyway, thats about all the mindless natter I can muster up for the time being... Kat Ps check out the attaxhed photos of riyadh!

Beginnings...

... my hospital, and then some of Michelles husband's mates from the military popped in at out at intervals throughout the arvo. It was such a surreal environment, we were sitting out the front in the shade, amongst green grass, under a palm tree, and every time someone walked past, they would call out, say hi and pop in for a drink! Almost movie-like cheesyness to it :p But I'm really glad that I went, and had a chance to really mix with the girls that I'm going to be working with ...

We (Barely) Make it to Cairo

... Islamabad or Karachi. We waited, until he came back and gave us the thumbs up, indicating we were on. Al Humdullalah! We quickly processed our luggage, got our boarding passes and headed for passport control/security check. Oh Oh... The line to go through passport control and the security check was looooooong. I estimated over an hour if we waited in line. Dawn suggested I go up and see if we could get through because our flight was slated to depart in half an ...
