... night watchman (Achmed, a really nice guy, as we later learned) falling backward and him, myself, and Murray – plus all of our luggage – becoming riad dominoes down the stairs!

Yet. We made it safely to our room, dropped our bags, and quickly and wearily crawled into bed. Of course, it took both Murray and me a while to finally fall asleep…

We woke up around 8:15am this morning, only because someone was calling out a random ...
Fes, Morocco annalisamurray... the bus before we leave the station. They sell everything from sweet bread, to drinks and snacks. The guy next to me buys some sweet bread and shares some with me. We make a few stops, and don't arrive to Fez until around 7, 7.30pm, again, a bit longer than expected. As the ride progressed I started talking the guy next to me, and he was a nice guy. He even invited me to stay with him in his parents house for the night, but I felt I would be too impaired in my ...
Fes, Morocco aaronstimmel... touts. Fes is legendary for its touts. So per advice of travelers and nationals alike, we charged into the Medina "tres serioux." We were on a mission to get to our hotel without being waylaid by any hustlers, purveyors, guides, hoteliers, or criminals. Straight, left, right. "No" we didn't need a hotel. "No" we were not hungry. Lo and behold there's the hotel! After five minutes of not being lost and less hassle than you might expect in ...
Fes, Morocco jenandjeffmilum... the hard sell that, inevitably, came after the tour. Our guide took us on to a herbalist that specialized in traditional herbs, where an extremely enthusiastic young chemist proceeded to extoll the virtues of a series of Moroccan herbs, spices, and extracts, some used for their beautifying, edifying, or aphrodisiac qualities ('this is traditional Berber herb, you make tea with this, no sleep, jiggy-jiggy!'). We passed on the jiggy ...
Fes, Morocco dangabesisaak... in search of a bookstore, having ran out of reading material and being forced to buy the only english printed magazine (The Economist) at a newstand. We found a small selection in the new part of town and bought Robinson Crusoe and Kidnapped. Last night after buying the books, having some pizza we endeavoured to hail a taxi back to the Medina. It was a nightmare come true that lasted over an hour which included walking all over town, waiting in stagnant lines and watching ...
Fes, Morocco bradskey69... photos of Tangier and Fes? There answer is ..... in some Moroccan's pocket. I left an Internet cafe in Fes and left my USB card reader and card attached to the PC. I went back to the Cafe about four hours later when I discovered my blunder but it was to late. All my photos from Rio to Fes are gone. Luckily, Some photos from Rio to Gibraltar were uploaded to the Travelpod site. It is only Tangier and Fes that are gone for ever. I still have the memories. ****************
Fes, Morocco anywherebuthereFor so long the biggest, longest, most expensive trip I had planned was to Morocco. I knew right away that I needed to go there at some point this semester. Early on some girlfriends and I booked a trip with a company we heard highly of. It was expensive but we knew it would be safe. It was long, we had to skip class, but we knew it would be worth it. Finally, a few days before we left I started to get scared. Most of the news we hear in Spain of Morocco is ...
Fez, Morocco mwalsh86... some six year olds breezing through long division while a ten year old can't write his own name and wants you to help? Oh, and your host teacher is asleep at the back of the room after telling you not to bother with the stupid ones who can't write. Of the volunteers, one of their number was sufficiently idealistic to organise for the kids to have a competition to pick up garbage off the beach - whoever collected the most would win a soccer ball. Smart prize selection ...
