... We studied a new rhythm ev**y day, which meant that I didn't advance as much as technically as I oth**wise might have ... but it was v**y int**esting to get exposure to a lot of new music. We made a side trip out to the island of Roume, it was the only part of the country that might attract non drumming tourists ... quiet nice and peaceful. I wouldn't recommend Guinea to anyone, except the most hardened drumming enthusiast.
Conakry, Guinea ikono... at maps. Growing up "Where in the world is Carmen San Diego" was a favorite show of mine. So I wanted to share that love with the next generation of Guinean children. SORVO, a group of Returned Peace Corps volunteers in the Dayton area, was gracious enough to fund this project so I want to send out a really big thank you to all of them. I bought paint brushed in the US and 20 liters of paint in Kissidougou. The original plan was to have the 6th grade class do the map ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... driving for 15 hours niether of us was in the mood to leave. So dad, being the debonair, handsome, not to mention very young-looking, man that he is, he was able to break into our house where we both collapsed in exhaustion. The next day was the day before the big event. It was time to pamper the bride (and me). She got her legs waxed (2 hour long procedure), me my eyebrows (maybe 15 minutes), got manicures and pedicures and headed to the chuch with the ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... her back to you for a few weeks (Please return her to me...I live in a hut in Africa-I need all the help I can get!) That said, I'm sending her back to you changed...not necessarily worse, but definitely different. For your sake, I am enclosing a brief instruction manual for the "Guinea-anized" SIA KAMANO: 1. She may lapse into Malinke, or French and maybe even Arabic at what seems like random intervals. Don't be ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... do we have to be? But she does not like spiders, actually she hates spiders which I found very contradictory for someone so laid back about everything else. It's quirks like that that really let you love a person. She was always singing songs I'd never heard and she is probably the best listener I've ever met. She could just tell if you needed advice or if you just needed to talk. It is a special gift. I was able to observe Mel in her ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... I need a bathroom." See, even though I'd gone I still really needed to go more. So he stops right after a village. Too far for me to find a real pit latrine but not far enough that the entire village can't see me if I squat on the side of the road. But there was nothing I could do. So five feet away from my cab in plain view of the passengers, road, village, houses, etc. I squat. And as I had left the car so quickly, without my emergency ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... quickly and I sat on my bed reading my one letter and crying a lot. Then a man came to my open door and said "Le vehicle qui est parti a toue votre chaton." translated as "The car that left killed your kitten." I didn't want to understand. He must be mistaken. I walked outside to a devastating site. My perfect little friend smushed by the side of my house. It was too much to handle. I started sobbing uncontrolably. Guineans are very uncomfortable with ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... and he has to go back to the states. He teared up while he talked about how much he was going to miss us, etc. It was very emotional. The swearing in was very simple. We all raised our right hands and repeated what the Ambassador said about protecting a country from domestic and foreign enemies, etc. And that was it; we became volunteers. I am now a PCV (Peace Corps Volunteer) so on all my mail instead of PCT you will put PCV, just fyi ...
Conakry, Guinea kylejesw... Zach and Katie, Nick, Alex, Lisa, David and Kat sat in back. It took 13 hours. We saw a monkey cross the road. And we listened to music that actually had a baby crying...as part of the song! Awful. But we made it back alive and then life in Forecariah started again. I was really happy to be back and have my own bed, and all my stuff. This is our last week of training and next time I write I'll probably be an official volunteer! So until then...peace out.
