... journey back took a different route to the one to Plovdiv. Instead of going through the town of Stara Zagora, the bus took a spectacular route that wound through the snowcapped Balkan Mountains. We went through the Shipka Pass, famous in Bulgaria for being the scene of several conflicts between the Bulgarians and the Ottoman Empire during the Russo - Turkish War of 1877 - 1878.

I didn't arrive back in Veliko Tarnovo until past 20.00.

I made my own version of the sliced tomato, mozzarella and pesto salad that Kate had at Tempo Pizza on our birthday weekend. ... and also walk down to the River Yantra, but unfortunately we didn't. We did however go into a supermarket so that Emma and Kate could look round and pick up one or two things for themselves, family members and friends. The sun was out again when we left, so on our way back to my flat, we stopped at one or two lookout points for photos.

Soon after we got back we had some of my colleagues round for birthday cake and some tea ...

... In the last seat of the car was a young Korean, wearing ear buds and singing along to Korean rap. That was the total population of our 2nd Class car (no 1st Class on this train.) and the train was only four cars long.
