... to the engine viewing room. The engine sure is impressive! It really does work on steam and is fuelled by oil. Those two main pistons are HUGE! At 4.30 there was a Dixie land Jazz performance by the boat's band. It was really excellent and very much enjoyed by all. The trumpet player was particularly good. Up early for brekky in the very posh dining room then a slide show by the riverlorian about the river in general and the boat/ship in particular, then an explanation of how the excursions work. Apparently the very fancy buses which are decorated to look like the paddle steamer follow us up the river. We landed at Nottaway instead of Oak Alley because of the height of the river, so our bus trip ...

Leaving the drama of New Orleans behind us, we took a taxi back to the airport and picked up a hire car. Headed out west towards Baton Rouge and set the SatNav for the Oak Alley Plantation. This Creole plantation (french speaking descendants of original French pioneers) grew sugar cane and had a large number of slaves prior to the civil war. It is a beautiful place, right ...

Change of plans

... and information. This makes sense I guess since Stennis Space Center was a shuttle engine test facility. With the Shuttle program ending, so did the operations at Stennis.

Unfortunately, the schedule has changed with the change in operations. Today the science center and tours were closed.

We ended up continuing to Baton Rouge to a campground and staying the night there.

A huge statue of Huey Long, the former governor and senator of Louisiana is in the middle of the garden marking his grave.
