John: After Rotorua we headed south to Lake Taupo and to conquer the Tongariro Crossing, the so-called "best day hike in NZ". We decided to trek the crossing first then head back up to Lake Taupo, which is a nice resort town on the lake, for Christmas. The plan was for me to do the 3 day Tongariro Circuit with Amanda only doing the first day. Due to weather we waited 2 days in a tiny trout fishing town called Turangi (2-wrong-ee). The DOC is the Dept of Conservation and it maintains all the f...
Turangi, North Island, New Zealand cheesenut30-Jan: Still recuperating from the leg cramps caused by the long walk to Aratia Dam & back. Not too bad though (it's those aches that you feel when you've not exercised for a long time). Today, I took a bus to Turangi (southern end of Lake Taupo, 1hr drive fr Taupo). The reason I plan to stay at Turangi is to join the Tongariro Crossing - a 20km trek + climb to the volcanic craters of the Tongariro National Park, it's one of the LOTR filming location of Mt Doom & the land of Mordor. ...
Turangi, New Zealand foochenweeStopping off in the little town of Turangi, we booked onto the main attraction of the area; the Tongariro crossing. Having missed out on a sunny day in Nelson to do the Abel Tasman National Park, we thought we would redeem ourselves with a 7 hour walk across mountains and lakes instead. Our hostel was situated in a quiet street next to the river and somewhere we thought will be lovely to relax over the next couple of days, especially after the walk. The day before our walk, a group came back ...
Turangi, North Island, New Zealand nickandbev... small basic cabins we typically rent were being renovated at this place so they upgraded us for free. After dinner we soon found out we were not alone in our room. We started to see massive cockroaches behind the pictures on the walls, mirrors, and along the kitchen counter. After complaining and switching to another room, we still had the same problem, but not as bad. The next morning ...
Turangi, North Island, New Zealand unboundRose: Today is April Fool's Day and, as the alarm goes off at 540am, we are wondering who the fools are. We get picked up by the bus that will drop us off at the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing one-day walk - described as NZ's best day walk. Classified as challenging. Let me reassure you that we are challenged doing it. It's some 20km which in itself is not negligable but when you factor in the terrain and the weather conditions you ...
Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand joelrose... National Park". Sorry to destroy the tourist pap on this one but it is really just a circular track up a hill - go to Switzerland for Engineering marvels. Exited at national Park and after some effort found someone willing to give me a lift up the mountain to Whakapapa the outpost for all the trampers during the summer season. Unfortunately the weather forcast did not ...
Whackapapa, North Island, New Zealand dj-travelblog09... a botched car radio - delightful. Our backpackers in National Park was adjacent to Whakapapa village (& village I use loosely). There is a huge climbing wall in the hostel as well as a fully equipped kitchen. Behind lies a cafe, in front a bar & just around the corner a petrol station with a little supermarket. Other than that, pickings are slim with your only company being mountains & solitude. Only ...
National Park Village, North Island, New Zealand tkd_demon... for hikers was a somewhat small wooden area, but the problem was that all the hikers from before us to all those that came after us needed shelter and we were all huddled under their waiting to be picked up by our buses. Our trek started at 8 and ended at 4 but we finished it by 2:30. So, we had a while to wait... in the cold, in our wet clothes. After 3 a number of buses came for other people, but ours was not there until about 5 to 4. It was worth it though. Once home we ...
Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand adillon... s going to appear." To paraphrase Clint Eastwood in the December issue of Esquire, here in New Zealand the mentality is like it was in America in the old days: "if you fall, you're stupid." So it is at the narrow, treacherous crater atop Mt. Ngauruhoe: if you're not really careful you might actually fall in. And there's no fence to protect you. The other aspect of Kiwi society that I like very much is the "we're all in this together" mentality, meaning ...
Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand intrepidfred... but when we arrived at the place to rent them the rain got even heavier, so we sacked that off without even getting out of the car.
It's so frustrating being somewhere with world-class watersports facilities and lovely scenery, yet weather which makes both irrelevant!
So without further ado we headed further south to ...
