... butterflies, bees and birds were plentiful and varied. Some of the butterflies insisted on landing on the path in front of us so we had to try to avoid standing on them; they must have had a death wish! One small tortoiseshell butterfly led us along the path for a good while, seeming to land for us to catch up before leading us on again.
One of the plans for the day was to treat ourselves to fish and chips on the sea front, so on our return ...

... of surface quality. The road was well potholed and had a few drops on either side but after a mile or so we reached a junction with a more major road which was nearly wide enough to have white paint down the middle.
We reached the Abbey safely, dropped off our walking gear and headed off to the main entrance to enjoy a cream tea at the cafe. This was a great treat at the end of our active day.

... for air crew from the nearby air base. The National Trust have developed the Hall as a location for themed exhibitions of portraits from the collection of the National Portrait Gallery and currently it is hosting a number of pictures of the Royal Family.
After a break in the cafe we headed south to York. To make the most of our time in York we caught the 'Park and Ride' bus into the city and had a walk ...

... much traffic (either foot or road). We continued our wanderings after the service but the sun had gone in and we were getting a little cold so we headed off for a coffee and a read of the newspapers in Costa.
The temperature was still not improving much, so after a quick walk we headed back to the apartment.
Once we had changed we went for a walk in the Abbey grounds. There is a bird hide at the top ...

Well we did it! One more long distance footpath under the belt (which is now slightly looser for both of us!). The whole of the walk was quite beautiful with fantastic scenery all around nearly all of the time. In this respect the Offa's Dyke Path was one of the best walks we have done. The route was well maintained with good way marking, gates, stiles, bridges and sometimes wooden or stone staircases to help out ...
