Mark and I woke up pretty lazily today because of the morning rains beating on the hotel window. I walked a whole twenty feet to the outside hallway and got us some continental breakfast, which we didn't end up finishing because I'm a closet, food hoarder :)
The plan today was to go up to Mt. Hood to the peak at Timberline Lodge. We were …
It's me again, Brittni "soon to be" Paul!
Today's Mark and my first day as an engaged couple :)
We left Crater Lake early this morning around 8am, just incase the lake decided to give us a snowy wave goodbye. Before leaving the national park, we pulled over to the side of the road to look at a huge ravine …
The day was cool and damp. Nick (nickname Ori, as in orifice 'cos his surname's Hole) took us downtown and for a walk along the Willamette river. We crossed couple of Portland's many bridges and could look across to the city. The riverfront has been smartened up quite a bit. We popped into the Nike Store to see what Linda does and walked around Pioneer Square and saw the popular food stalls. Lunch was in Deschutes, a brewery with an excellent ...
Well, I can't believe it, but my long-awaited sabbatical is ready to begin!!
I have an overnight flight to Newark, a nice brunch planned with Jamie in Brooklyn, and then it's off to Rome. Truly one of my favorite cities, so it seems the perfect jumping off point for my European adventure. My ...
... crossed his path. Perhaps his wife had been beset with all manner of plagues too. After breakfast we took the Tri Met MAX (rail system) into the downtown core. This is where the silver lining of not camping became evident. Congestion is a real issue here with parking hard to find and at a premium. Had we stayed at Champoeg State Park we would have had a 30 minute drive into the city (which we observed yesterday as being a crawl punctuated with moments of ...

Historical Traveler Reviews River's Edge Hotel &Spa Portland
A peaceful place
I stayed here while in town on business. This was by far the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in that also offered a government rate that did not exceed the maximum allowed. My room was spacious and very clean and nicely decorated, although I didn't get a river view like one of my colleagues. The spa/gym facilities were exceptional and the staff made me feel right at home. I'd stay here again in a flash. Take a short walk to the far end of the parking lot and you'll find a great Mexican restaurant that is not visible from the hotel...
I was very disapointed with my stay here. You can get the same service and room in downtown for half the price. I thought for the price I paid, this hotel was lacking. The towel are not plush, room service was not that great. In my room the fireplace did not work. I strongly advice anyone to go somewhere else and spend your money more wisely. Nice but not worth the asking price
Just returned from my 2nd visit to the Avalon Hotel & Spa. What a lovely place. So peaceful. Everyone on staff was wonderful. The river view suite was "apartment size" complete with fireplace. Local friends who visited while I was there all came away impressed.
An upscale place but lacking just a couple of amenities for the price. I would really like to see an oversize tub in the bathroom. The view of the river is nice but blocked by many trees (maybe not bad). Also, the private patio is only private because a canvas divider separates each. Would be nice if it was a bit more private. The hotel is close to downtown but make no mistake, it is not within walking distance. It is a very quiet place though. Having said all the negatives up front, let me say the service is the best feature of this hotel. Everyone was kind and genuinely interested in making your stay nice. The free towncar service to downtown is great. They even pick you up, but make sure to reserve a few hours ahead. We also ate at The Rivers restaurant next door for our anniversary. It was okay but very noisy for an anniversary dinner. Overall, a very good hotel if you don't need to be right downtown.
We were looking for a quiet, modern, romantic, upscale place to stay and the Avalon thoroughly satisfied all of those desires. The room was clean, very nicely appointed, and overlooked the river, and we particularly appreciated the spacious bathroom featuring a separate tub and shower. In the morning we could hear the honking of the geese and watch an occasional small boat on the river. The decor of the Avalon is minimalist modern and the staff were helpful and friendly without being pretentious or overbearing. The restaurant next door (Rivers) was also quite good and their staff was very welcoming. The Avalon is somewhat remote from center city Portland and can be tricky to get to, but unless you have a burning need to be in the heart of the city, I don't think you can beat the Avalon in terms of cost/benefit. And do check out the Spa!!
Beautiful place to stay
????Beautiful setting, good service, great spa, and excellent restaurant. ??? The town car made visiting other sites in Portland easy as we didn't have to worry about directions or parking.
Best stay ever, staff great,
frontdesk staff Aaron was above all supermagnificent .Glorious stay
Lovely hotel, close to OHSU
very very nice common areas and room, bathroom quite sleek, free internet access a big plus. Only negative is my room (not the most expensive) looked out on a generator ( the wooden fence encircling the equipment was about 8 feet from my window).
Relaxing place to stay
I found the hotel from the air port by taxi. It is a pleasant, relaxing environment. There is a nice walking path along the river, "best fish I have had in a long time" at the restaurant, and the spa was convenient to use.
Nice quiet place with no excitement
Lovely setting looking out at the river. Difficult to find. Location is far from town. Bathrooms nice; but, not clean. Rooms are pleasantly appointed. Spa is very nicely done. Restaurant has a beautiful setting by the river. Price is OK for the setting. The staff was friendly and polite; but there was no promotion or excitement about the hotel that I could see.
