... level was high and the waters were rushing along quickly. Debris from the storm was strewn along the trail. There was a coolness in the air. The mist hung low and clouded our view of the cliffs from time to time. The air hung heavy with precipitation and I couldn't tell if I was sweating or if it was the water in the air that condensed on my skin. Either way, we were damp and it was humid.

All in all, a wonderful time in Punakaiki!

... long time sitting at the viewpoint admiring the mighty spectacle (as well as taking some photos of Dalai Dave and Seb's mascot, Kiwi Karl). Returning to the carpark, we said goodbye to Seb after exchanging contact details. ... knows exactly how they got to look like that. The blowholes are a u shaped large rock that faces the oceans current, so during high tide, waves come into the U shape and blow upwards. Looks like a whale blowing water but 10x more powerful. We kept driving down through Greymouth, which is a pretty big city, more commercialized. It's the largest city in the west coast. ... and then rode through the back rural areas, checking out historic settlements and pubs – no drinking when we ride but a lot of locals happy to chat and share the knowledge of good rides; places to visit and what to see when there. ... Denniston from Wales and Cornwall with their wives, to find they were going to live in a tiny hut and very harsh conditions. However the community grew and flourished and they even built their own swimming pool out of the rock. Food was hard as there was no soil to grow a garden so everything was brought up via the incline. Once up, families rarely went down!
After the visit we made our way to the excellent Museum at Westport and then travelled south towards Greymouth. ...
