Arriving in Chiang Mai, we were hit by a wall of heat. This was going to be the beginning of our hot period... We checked into the River View Lodge - a fab place where the owner has a collection of classic cars parked outside the front. Obviously, I will nonchantly strike up a conversation and see can I have a go. The main purpose of our stopover in Thailand is to go to Cookery School, so we booked in for two days. What craic! We were picked up in a Minibus by a lovely Thai lady (Boooooom) an...
Chiang Mai, Thailand loguerModes of Transport Thailand 3 Sukhothai/ChaingMei Because some of you asked....there are lots of ways to get around here...There is no real traffic pattern other than you are supposed to go in the same direction on the appropriate side of the street! Other than that, it is WHEREVER the vehicle fits.We saw a motorbike going down a steep hill yesterday with 5 people on it!!! Yes I did say motorbike. We left or Sukhothai "resort" called on Friday morning (headed to the bus station by a Toyota ta...
Sukhothai, Thailand lubob... are happy to chat to tourists and explain anything about the temples or Bhudism you wish to know. Apparently they are keen to practice their English. We also met groups of students both in Bangkok and in Chiang Mai who were armed with question lists (what is your age, where do you come from and do you like Thailand etc) and they go and practice their English on foreigners with these lists. Quite cute!

One of the highlights in Chiang Mai was definitely the ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand ivoandannemieke... Riverside rest we only tried at lunchtime and was good and apparantly is good for evenings. Last night we tried Da Stefanos, an Italian- cheap and cheerful. The Melon was a little underripe but the pastas were excellent. There was an electric shutdown during the evening but the staff just light candles and carry on so probably a regular occurrence in this street. However it did happen just as we were trying to pay ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand tizwoz... Today, tourists are surprised by the fact that there is always something new to discover Chiang Mai. Intriguing diversity among ethnic tribes coupled with breathtaking scenery makes Chiang Mai one of Asia’s most attractive tourist destinations. Two weeks in Chiang Mai may not be long enough for serious travelers.

The old city of Chiang Mai with its fascinating indigenous cultural ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand amazingthailand... thought I was scared. I'm scared for the day those tigers get tired of tourists putting their heads on their asses and unleash however many pounds of destruction that they have in their bodies on everyone in the cage. But the bright side of the picture, well, luminous compared to the darkness of the other side of the spectrum that is the destiny of the Bengal Tiger. Poachers are taking out the tigers slowly but surely. A person can become rich just by the sale of one ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand tex25... how I could get out of town the next day, as I was planning to go up to Pai, a small town 3-hrs north of Chiang Mai. Earlier I was told busses would be running during the holiday, but today was told that they were shut down. I think it's just an easy answer to tell the Westerners everything is closed. Finally, she changed her story again and told me I could buy a ticket at the bus terminal directly. Not being able to figure out if I needed to get it in ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand emdowds... This wasn't something I was particularly interested in but it was on the menu. The place we stopped at though was pretty bad. It was just some ramshackle hut perched next to the road. You got on the elephants, two to a seat, with the driver in the front and then took off up the hill. The whole area was denuded and dead. You crested a hill and came to a couple dilapidated huts where the workers must live. Without telling us anything the drivers got off the ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand zombywoof... never meet again. my tour van and all it's occupants waited patiently as i exchanged details and said goodbye to michelle, boarding wet and muddied. we curved through the market, past the teeming fish bowl and onto the highway, through rain forest and open pastures into a quiet hill tribe community an hour off the track. the karen village nestles at the foot of a green mountain spine, flattened into rice fields and simple huts built on stilts. pathways between the ...
Chiang Mai, Thailand cinema4Our pre-arrival experience at Chiang Mai (CM) was the opposite of BKK - the city was universally loved by all who visited it. Ever since we started relating our itinerary to folks upon hearing we were going to Thailand we would hear "go to Chiang Mai". We quickly decided to call this city the Ubud of Thailand due to it's upscale sir, good shopping, excellent restaurants, culture capital reputation, and mostly because it is loved by everyone. If you read our previous post ...
