... by the light but constant rain and traction was hard to fine. Using the chant developed on the Karoo trip of "Look up, stand up and open up" we charged upwards. Gravel and mud spun out from the rear wheel as the front searched for a firm track. It was a steep climb with rocks scattered all across the road and the mud was treacle like and slippery as an ice skating rink. Perhaps it was better that we could not see the drops off the edge of the road obscured by the mist. ...

... he said he was not riding a meter further. I helped him get his bike up again and on its side stand. All of this was being observed from the top of the hill by Maree who had got through the section but had expected trouble, therefore making the decision to stop. Wayne had gone ahead. Had lunch at what bills itself as the Highest Pub in Africa (2874m above sea level), at a lodge right on the edge. Awesome views down, and a road I wouldn't want to drive - in fact the border post won't even let you past unless you have a 4x4. We left our bags at the lodge and walked along the cliff edge a bit, before deciding that if we wanted to hitch a ride down the pass we better hurry back to ...

... weather, if the clouds had come in we would not see a thing! We leave our mark on the pub wall then make the journey back down and into SA again. It's a lot quicker going down and only takes about 30 minutes, until we come across a stopped car with a pair of feet sticking out from under and two kids playing in the mud. A German family on their way up having break trouble, we help them out by supplying them with the tools they need to fix the problem. Our good ...
