... or maybe to construct something. We kept going on the gravel roads, crossing numerous drifts. The roads started to deteriorate and we reached a steep incline. I was behind Edgar and he went through a particularly difficult section dropping his bike. He was clearly frustrated with the situation. I tried to keep up momentum and get past the section. It was really tough and I was very grateful not to come off as I was all over the place. I put my bike on its side stand and walked back ...

... and switchbacks slowly while at the same time keeping sufficient momentum going. It was quite strenuous on the arms and required intense concentration. I passed the area where 2 years ago I had had a flat tyre with my Fortuner and was grateful to now get through the steep incline without having to stop to repair a tyre. Had lunch at what bills itself as the Highest Pub in Africa (2874m above sea level), at a lodge right on the edge. Awesome views down, and a road I wouldn't want to drive - in fact the border post won't even let you past unless you have a 4x4. We left our bags at the lodge and walked along the cliff edge a bit, before deciding that if we wanted to hitch a ride down the pass we better hurry back to ...

... failed attempts at ascending the path over the Northern Lesotho mountains. My heart is racing, Jon is super excited! He handles the road like a pro and the drive is awesome, even 'suicide bend' and 'haemorrhoid hill' can't stop us! It takes about an hour to drive up and across the boarder into Lesotho. At the top is Africa's highest pub offering something to calm the nerves. We settle on a coffee, while taking in the magnificent views. We have been so lucky ...

Beyond this point the state of the road worsens and turns into a jumble of stones and boulders interspersed with loose scree making for tricky driving even on low gear. It climbs sharply over a series of tight switchbacks, many of which have been given interesting nicknames. The Reverse Corner is where the turn is so sharp that vehicles are forced to back up to the very edge of the road before they can complete the turn. The 'Oh My ...
