... number. The train from Rostock was a little busier as there were fewer carriages. These local trains are not designed for people with luggage bigger than a rucksack as, although the step on to the train is flush with the edge of the platform, there are several steps up to the seats situated either side of a rather narrow aisle. We were happy to stand for the 20 minutes it took to travel the short distance.

On Tuesday, we left Hamburg and drove to Malchow, via a medieval town, Schwerin, which had a huge castle. It was the former residence of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg. It was built in the mid C19, incorporating existing structures from the C16 and C17. There were even foundation remnants going back to 1000AD. The cruise brochure said we'd tie up in Wartemunde and be able to walk into town - wrong. We woke up to a view of the industrial port, 25km from Wartemunde and 20 minutes by bus to Rostock.
