This river view hotel is in a great location and gave access to shopping, sights, restaurants etc. the rooms were very basic and not very comfortable but we didn't spend much time in the room. The hotel also has some quite good food on offer in the restaurant and the staff were great.

    "Bamboo" Raft to Yangshuo

We had a choice of a big boat or a small boat for our "cruise" to Yangshuo. Being budget conscious we opted for the raft, which turned out to be plastic pipes lashed together...and there were hundreds of them ready and waiting at the dock when we got off the bus! The trip up the Li River was still pretty amazing, although the Irish man on our four …

Today Ian would be celebrating his 60th, and our little Ella her 1st birthday. What a shame we were a world away.
The plan today was to get to Yangshuo via a cruise down the Li River. The distance between Guilin and Yangshuo is 83 Kms. We had selected the bamboo boat option for a couple of reasons, it meant a 10 am pick up …

This morning we woke up to the most dreadful din going on just outside the hotel. There was an early morning procession with drummers, fireworks, and a rowdy crowd. As the procession progressed we realised it was a funeral procession. We presumed it must have been someone important but learnt that it was very usual.

The train pulled into Guilin earlier than expected. I slept pretty well on the bottom bunk in hard sleeper class. The 5 other Chinese people filling the other beds were very quiet and didn't have insane ringtones going off every 30 seconds so with my ear plugs in and my travel blindfold on I got about 10 straight hours with the help of some snoo...

19 hour train ride to Gui Lin!

Today we have both been nursing a bit of a rough hangover from last nights revelries and once again has been a case of hanging around the city again but this time keeping a closer eye on the time. It has been raining all day lightly but it's still warm enough to wear shorts and a t shirt which keeps me happy, I just hope the weather improves as ...
