I have to admit to a total surprise, and I guess ignorance, of the countryside here. I had it in mind that it would be full forests and hills, similar to Switzerland, expecting Julie Andrews to appear singing 'the hills are alive with the sound of music' ! ... bakery (I’m sure they put cinnamon on it and not cocoa!), I entered old town and made my way to the tourist information centre. The first thing I noticed was the HUGE number of tourists around. Maybe it was because it was Saturday but there was a god awful number of tourists around. And lot of touristy things going on as well. This in itself was enough to downgrade my opinion of Riga.

So I found a small corner underneath the stairs where I could chain my bike to a rusty water duct. After a few days, I found a little sign on my bike for the building's caretaker, in (apparently rather bad) Latvian, telling me not to park my car in front of the door. So since then, I carry my bike up one flight of stairs and chain it to the railing (with my specially imported Dutch AXA lock), where I can't help ...
... and giant snowflakes. They looked a bit out of place with no real snow around them, but were pretty none the less. We also saw the giant statue of a lady holding up stars (the freedom statue?). Instead of heading into the center of old town we kept to the outside and walked past the Riga Castle. It was not much of a castle as far as pretty towers and detail go, but I guess you could call it a castle. There was a bunch of restoration work going on on the exterior... ...
