Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan beachmonkie... many stories about the summit such as meeting other groups of indigenous peoples, struggle for coordinating the event, joy of the success, etc. I felt their passion, and I felt great starting to know about such great people. The next indigenous summit will be in Canada next summer. Hopefully I can participate in the event next year. Takashi kept telling about the importance of the education especially for younger generations to learn about multiculturalism and ...
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan beachmonkie... up on all sides of the airport. It was positively illuminating--the entire landscape, white and fluffy and very, very bright! Quite a change! Well, got to the JR ticket counter and had fun trying to navigate a return trip, but it eventually worked out. Monday was a holiday ("Constitution Day"?) so the only way that we found was leaving town late Sun. night and riding 4 trains, 1 overnight and 3 about 2 hours long or so out of Sapporo all the way back to Osaka. It was a looong trip ...
Sapporo, Japan audrangeaWe're in Sapporo now and it's absolutely amazing. However the hostel is charging ten yen per freaking minute to use the internet - which adds up to roughly $10 AUD an hour. So there won't be any further posts until we reach Tokyo again in another three days.

Missing you all,
Tom and Rachael
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan tomfonder... I would see. The lesson of the day came from Matt of all people. He filled us in on the history and nature of the Yosakoi Soran dance festival as we stood and watched it. Apparently the only requirements are that the song be based on a traditional fishing song and the dancers use the little clappers in their dance routine. All the customs and routines made for a great show. Though I don't plan on participating ever, this may be a festival I would like to return to one day.
Sapporo, Japan wdwatts... From there it was out to Otaru, a small seaside town 30 or so minutes by train from Sapporo. This lovely looking town looked like somewhere from Europe and is famous for glass items, music boxes and old style archetecture. The main streets were paved and lined with little shops. Dan had a go at glass blowing and made a vase. The highlight of this trip was seeing the Otaru canel at sunset. The canel is lined with historic warehouses many which are now restaurants and shops.
