Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France vinnywareWe were up early and left the house at around 7:00am. We had a tunnel train to catch at 9:00. With the rush hour traffic, we didn't want to get stuck and miss our train. We arrived at the train station with plenty of time. We stepped into the Duty-Free shop for a little early shopping. We headed out to the train once we were called to prepare. We drove down into the station and headed into the train ...

Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France therv... sad but large Cora (no Carrefour in sight) and bought enough Pastis to see us through the summer and hopefully until a return trip to the south and the boys at Le Canto Cigalo. What a gentle irony, I thought, as I started the final leg of my journey from Rheims and it started to rain. I started to reflect on my time away and my musings were interrupted by the radio announcing that tomorrow it is going to be a 'fete du cinema' day in ...
Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France kyria... in a north European kind of way, especially the town hall. I push on back into France for the culmination of this part of my trip and reach Calais around midday. I drive down towards the water and come across what looks like a beach from a distance but actually is a concrete road on quite a slant that goes all the way into the water. I can only guess it may have been built around the time of WW2. On my way back into town I make a brief visit to the cathedral and a ...
Calais, France everardt... hotel made it unreasonably difficult to get it checked in and thus we were left standing in front of the hotel. Eventually, Tanya comes scooting out and gives the girls their room key. I'm usually last to figure out which room I was in because I was rooming with Tanya for the length of the trip. I don't mind waiting a little longer, though. It gives me time to round up Tanya's luggage with my own and scope out the hotel lobby a bit. Rooming with Tanya had ...
Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France mizramirez... off. The ferry ride over was great. We took Sea France and the boat was very nice. On board there was two restaurants, two bars, lots of video games and gambling machines, a duty free store (which wasn't much of a deal but fun to walk around in) and an area at the stern where you could go outside. The trip took about an hour and fifteen minutes. Once in Calais we headed east.
Calais, France theskinnersWe soon climbed out of the tunnel and raced towards the train's first stop at Lille. The land was flat, bathed in sunshine and looking decidedly and strangely 'foreign' !!!

We were served with a late lunch during this section of the ride. Well cooked and well served! Also with a nice glass of champagne!!!
