... settled, we headed out for dinner. I had that magical travel experience where you discover a brand new culinary deight. Get this- neuer wine, or new wine. This stuff is aged for *1* short week, then served in pint glasses. It tastes like Mike's **********ade. Me likey.

This morning we set off northbound up the wine road, or Weinstrasse. Here is what you do- you drive to a teeny German wine village, park outside a vinter's ...
Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany sql_spice... the lift back down, we strolled through the town visiting various shops. I bought some gifts and found a pin. We stopped at a sidewalk café and had something to drink. Jack and Suzanne ordered hot chocolate. It took a long time to come and when the waitress was questioned she said “Because it made fresh.” It was worth the wait. It came on a platter with a pot of chocolate, cup & ...
Rüdesheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany tucsonjohn... Steakhouse). As people who travel often we wondered what the food was going to be like as we know Germans love their food and large portions. The food was well cooked and tasty, and the service was excellent. We were surprised in the steak house we ordered Rib eye Steak and got Fillet Steak although perfectly cooked not what we ordered (although we only paid for Rib eye), but everything else with the meal was extra ...
Hahn, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany madcaravanner... Reinfels Ruins, which was once the greatest castle in all of Germany. We even tried to go down to the mine tunnels, crawling underground with just a flashlight to guide the way. Unfortunately we hit one too many dead ends and so we didn´t get too far. Just as we were leaving, the rain started up again. After huddling together for our ¨picnic on the Rhine¨ underneath one of the signal towers, we decided to brave it back to Bacharach. We were ...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany tommcatt... whose age ranged from about seven to thirteen. They all seemed to be from the same school, and they did not seem to know much English neither did they seem so friendly when I spoke to them in German.

As we were sailing through vineyards in a famous winegrowing area, we shared an excellent glass of German white wine (Riesling) from the Bingen region. The Rhine was busy with water traffic ...
Bingen am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany woodsfamily... to Wurzburg Hbf didn’t come for 1.5 hours.

I was really mad and tried to go find the train station to ask someone if there was a quicker way to get there. But there was no station. So I just sat at the one bench beside the train tracks and worked on blogs and read by guidebook material for the Rhine Valley.

In the end I wasn’t really that mad about it. The later train was actually more direct than the early one. The early one would have ...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany zolina... a ridge and there it is sitting on a huge rock at the end of a cliff. Pretty cool if you like stuff like this. Boring if you don't.

We encountered a lot of senior German couples on the trail. They all are in pretty good shape. Better than me. A couple of them rocketed by. But it's probably because I pounded a beer before the hike. Oh who am I kidding? They probably pounded one too. They're German. So as luck would have it, we picked a pension that doesn't ...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany laters... right on the bank of the Rhine. Campgrounds here in Europe have ranged from roomy to very crowded. This campground is toward the very crowded end of the spectrum.
This campground even has a sort of beach on the Rhine. This river runs through Germany's industrial heartland, so I'm not really sure that it is such a good idea to swim in it.
Camping beside the Rhine is an interesting experience, though not a quiet one. First there is the barge ...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany albertabrandtsBoat cruise day today, from Bacharach to St Goar and back, 45minutes down and an hour back, through what is supposed to be the most interesting section of the Rhine. There is a castle on just about every corner, quite spectacular. The ruined Rheinfels Castle at St Goar is able to be toured, which we did for a couple of hours, in one way more interesting than touring the maintained ...
Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany jimandelle... bought water win bubbles- gross, but it's the only kind you can buy in Bacharach. We relaxed most the day and ended the day with a nice german meal including sauerbraten, potato dumplings, applestruddle, and beer with lemonade, and of course good german SLOW service. Tomorrow we will take a cruise down the Rhine to visit castles. We love Bacharach and the Germans, and we love you all!
