... of Pozsony although I had no idea that they were the same city. I check Student Agency which I have used twice before. Bingo. Gyor to Budapest. Takes 50 minutes direct and only costs E5. Only 2 buses per day so we leave at 6 PM.
The abbey's church is quiet impressive. Significant parts of it do go back to 1000 AD. The monastery is still active and the views from the top of the hill are excellent. Well worth the day trip.
Surprisingly to me ...
... of buildings from the 1700s plus and a river that sits at its walls. Nothing remarkable but a decent place to chill for a day or 2. Very few people makes it a little dreary. Since we can't find any nightlife, we go to a very nice restaurant (no English menu) then call it a night. Sharon is filling queasy so it is probably the right move. We are staying at a nice hotel which makes for a nice change.
Gyor, Hungary will.traveller... and cows. It smells just like Iowa! Yesterday we got to ride right up to a couple of horses and pet them on their necks and feed them grass. We also saw an egret. He was walking along the side of the bike path, and I saw him catch a fish in his long beak. We could walk right up by him. He wasn't afraid of us at all, and we had fun watching him walk across the bike path with his long legs.
Another highlight was the night they took us down to a wine cellar. This man ...
yikes... i wrote this entire section and the computer shut down... here is the cliff notes version: Yesterday I slept til 3...no more jet lag! Today I am heading 2 hours west by train to visit kornel, a friend i met in panama - also friends with karolina, my budapest host. I arrived with no problems and we walked around for a bit. Too bad i did not take any photos of the small town. It was very pretty! Kornel and ...
Gyor, Hungary ricolola... last 1,000 years or so and as such the artistic and architectural styles run the gamut from baroque and rococo all the way back to romanesque statuary in the cellars that was defaced by the invading Ottoman Turks.
It's also one of the biggest wine producers in the region, making some pretty tasty stuff.
Dunajska Luzna, Slovakia mozi... statues that fell with the regime. I quite enjoyed it, but for Attila it brought back bad feelings. Not living under the boot of the Russians myself, I can't comprehend his sentiment, but while I was snapping photos of Lenin and his comrades, he was spitting at them. Hence the lack of pictures (my camera takes photos that aren't in jpeg, his does). Back in the car. This time to Komarom, northwest of Tata ...
Komarom, Hungary dancer_alison... next morning, we were to head out to another small village--Papa, and from there, return to Budapest. The distance wasn't far at all from Gyor to Papa, and we were excited when we found a direct train at 8 am, that only was to take 45 minutes or so. Well, we located and boarded the train, and set out...More than an hour later, we began to get anxious, thinking "surely we will get there soon!" Well, we did get to a destination ...
Gyor, Hungary smbapc... of the spider (I'm not arachnaphobic, the worry is more that I'll be chatting to someone later in the day and a spider will crawl from my hair. I don't think there's anything you can say to mitigate harbouring arachnid parasites). I always had to stop after each entanglement on cold October mornings and rub face and hair vigorously for fully thirty seconds or more to shake off the creepy feeling. I mention this because the pavement of the bridge from Slovakia to Hungary had ...
Komarno, Slovakia dynamo... nature reserves is also very close to that town. A small Puszta offers horse riding and shows. Vienna centre is 1 hour drive from there and Bratislava some 30 minutes. Unfortunately, Mosonmagyaróvár is accessible only by car - there is a motorway to be crossed along the narrow road with very heavy traffic and no pavement + Hungarian law forbidding bike riding on the national (=main) roads.
