Elise's IV scare and Hair washes

Well, I jinxed myself by saying that no one had been in the hospital yet, Elise had to go in to get fluids and antibiotics. We think she drank some water in her bath, because she threw up and had diarrhea all night. (Everyone else was fine and we had all eaten the same food.) She continued to throw up all day and the following night, so that 36 hours later, she needed some IV fluids and she was running a slight fever so the doctor ...

China's One Child Policy

... give a hefty fine if you have a second child. So rich people can still have more than one kid, but in general, most families only have one child.

In Qingtian, because so many people are overseas, we’ve seen a lot of families here with 2 children. My (second) cousins here have 2 children in some of their families, and when we ask them about it, they say they had the second baby ...

We thought that was neat, that they got to spend a little time where their great grandparents probably did the same thing.

Here is an excerpt from Jacob’s writing:

…we got to go to our relative’s house. It was very big, bigger than ours with 5 floors, but was much more rundown. It was ...

My Great Grandfather's old house

Back then, this huge paved road was their garden and they had a view over the river.

My mom has such nice memories of this place. It is really neat to be here, to meet relatives we wouldn't otherwise get to meet, and hearing family stories. It is a real highlight of the trip for me.

... of it. Many people from Qingtian have been moving overseas, starting businesses, and mailing money back to their families, so we’ve found this "small city" to be relatively cosmopolitan! There are many overseas Qingtian people living mostly in Europe. We’ve heard people speaking fluent Spanish, French and German here. Actually very few go to America, so we haven’t heard any English!

Teaching in China

... black burn spots on the board. The desks are everywhere and chairs are usually upturned. I walked in today and someone had shaken a pepsi bottle and sprayed it EVERYWHERE. The chalkboard, and every single desk was sticky and grimy.

Tim's sister-in-law, also a teacher, made a comment saying it's nice to know grade 8's are the same worldwide :P

Anyway, here are some pictures of the school, our rooms and nearby.

Situated right next to what has to be the smelliest strip of water of all time is a beautiful little piece of land called Jiangxinyu. The Longmen Caves N Guanlin Si N Tragedy Strikes

Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya, So, today. How was today you ask. Well, what can begin as awesome can be completely thrown through the fan, ripped apart and then it's not so good anymore. We rose around eight and after a dried noodles and a 'three in one' coffee for breakfast we headed downstairs to allow Eve and Ping to argue over the room price. Sadly ...

Midterm Marathon

There are two things here in China that I consider to be my nemeses. If it weren't for these two things, life here would be completely enjoyable. Instead, I am plagued everyday by these two horrible, frustrating, and painful phenomena known to the locals as "wenzi" and "ting xie." "Wenzi," referred to by English speakers as mosquitoes, are the bane of my existence. Unlike Western mosquitoes, which are detectable by their distinctive buzzing, Chinese mosquitoes make no sound at all ...
