... gave us a lot of information not on the signs and plaques next to the paintings. It took us about two hours to go through the collection with the guide as a companion. It was a really great exhibit; very informative and interesting. We learned a lot about Van Gogh during our time there and it was so cool to see how is talent progressed over time, along with his mental instability.
After the exhibit and mom ...

Mulhouse, Alsace, France purplevelvet... The street that winds behind the theatre past Atlantis to the Elizabethenkirche was shut down to traffic and absolutely overflowing with people. They were squeezed into nooks and crannies with their caipirinhas, cachaca, and beers. Holding the crowds from spilling over into the cross streets were booths selling trinkets and treasures from around the globe, food stalls of amazing variety, and ...
Basel, Basel, Switzerland travelingdiva... ruins scattered throughout the area around the museum. We of course went straight for the large Roman theatre and then walked over to other nearby sites, including the temple facing the theatre, the main marketplace and town hall, a bakery, and the very interesting well house and bath house where you can go down into the well and look out to the bright sky high above.
All the walking combined with the heat had us pretty wiped out so we headed back to ...
... other people and we could sit down so we wouldn't obstruct anyone else's view.
There are two barges on the river and they let off fireworks in synchronization. So if you are standing on the high bank of the Rhine along the wall you would see them both and would get a spectacular show. Where we were sitting we had a full view of one but only occasionally saw the fireworks from the second barge. Nonetheless, it was a great show and I really enjoyed being a part of the entire experience.
... br>Twenty minutes passed, and we were still standing like lemons waiting for ONE car. The Sloan Ranger took a wonder up to the forecourt and pretended he was just a passer by (like you do on a motrway!) Anyway, on his return his words were "They are faffing about in the boot" mmmmm, should we wait or go? We had waited so long so we waited some more. We gave ourselves one of those stupid targets that if it reached 13:30 we would just go. 13 ...

Basel, Switzerland danischmelz... Canton (kinda like a US state) in Switzerland, but from listening to the locals, you wouldn't know. The dialect, also known as "Schweizer Deutsch" might as well be another foreign language itself. It was easy for me to identify Germans, because I could actually understand them! Fortunately for a poor exchange student limited to High German like me, Basel is also a very international city and English is widely spoken. In fact ...
Basel, Basel, Switzerland w.zahnMy parents had made a reservation for an apartment in Basel city, and so we made our way there at a reasonable time of the morning - again stopping on the way, this time at a very nice little bakery/gourmet shop, for and on-the-go breakfast. We weren't expecting much from the apartment, having booked it at a very reasonable price and it being so ideally-located. The apartment is just behind the main Messe (fair) complex, and approximately a 15 minute walk into the city ...
