... an exaggeration. The truth was the jeep was starting to run a little funny and I was scared to death that it would break down in the woods. With him on our tail, at least I knew someone would know we were in trouble. I did not really ever consider rolling off the mountain to be an actual risk, but we did see one truck deep into the valley that did exactly that. It seems to have been there for many years. What a day! First on the list was the Stanley Hotel. We took the tour and found out the hotel was where Stephen King was inspired to write The Shining, but none of the movie was filmed there. ... Heart of the Rockies", settled in 1880. Had coffee at a local cafe, all bib and braces overalls and big hats. Sampled peach pie- yum!

Drove through Buena Vista then past Mt Princeton, 14,000 feet. Travelled along the Arkansas River then up Independence Pass (named by prospectors who defied the local law) from Twin Lakes to the top at 3703 metres. Thick snow everywhere. Glad we had boots and anoraks. Climbed the last 5 metres for ...
