Surprise reunion

... so the combined train fare wasn't so astonishing.

I arrived in Strasbourg a few minutes before my brother's train so I went there to meet him. He was already there, looking around lost and confused. He spotted me and came over excitedly, and then spotted Lincoln. He made such a big scene over seeing my dog that some girls nearby laughed. He told me he had really hoped I would bring Lincoln. Of course Lincoln comes everywhere with me now!

A Brief Stop in Alsace

... s not that easy. After looking up train options, researching towns and hotels, and too much deliberation (mostly between Challi), we decided on Strasbourg.

Although Chad reported it an "industrial city", it turned out to be quite the opposite, with charming (yes, I said charming) half-timbered architecture, great food, and canals running throughout the town. The cathedral, (because there is one in every city and you’ve got to see each ...

The cradle of Europe

... France and walked a winding path to the Cathedral. Unfortunately it was closed for some reason so we only got to admire the exterior. We stopped for lunch at a delicious Alsatian restaurant, Au Dauphin. Here we experience the delicious local specialty, tarte flambée. It is similar in appearance to a pizza. The crust is lighter and thinner, and there is no tomato sauce or cheese, but instead a delicious cream. For toppings, the ...

Epernay to Strasbourg

... 10 years. We enjoyed both wines, and it was interesting to contrast the complexity of the vintage wine with the freshness of the young one. The lady explained that the champagne was produced by a "récoltant-manipulant", a grower who produces his own wine. Hence his bottles say "RM" on the lable. By contrast, houses such as Moet et Chandon are "négociant-manipulants", since they buy fruit, grape juice, or the base wine from other growers then produce ...

A nice detour

We caught the wrong train and wound up in Gengenbach. While we were waiting for a train back we met a lady who told us the town had a beautiful old-town section. So we went discovering again. After a good look around we stopped at a pub while we were waiting for the next train and got talking to the owner. Turns out he'd been to Australia on holiday, so we had a good time talking to him until it was time to go.

Back to the Alsace

... they have is from 1885, given that it was over €100 for a glass of that vintage I settled for my birth year vintage instead which was about 10% of that price... and worth every cent! My only regret on the night was that I wasn't able to also have the Escargot that young couple on the table next to me (all of 2cm away) were sharing. Mmmmmmmmm I am looking forward to returning to France!

Alsace Region

... area and camping at a little town a bit further away. Strasbourg was a nice place as well, and I would have liked to have had a better look around but, we have ANZAC day to think about. I would definitely say to come to the Alsace region if you had a spare weekend handy, it was well worth the visit. We are in Paris now, staying at the camp site just on the out skirts of the city, 30 Euros a night!!! That's the most we have ...

Alsace: Bicycling Along the Wine Route

... or with the assistance of a tour operator, whether you want to do a challenging tour at a clip pace or a relaxing sojourn at a leisurely one, you'll likely to look up for trains and planes! When doing so, keep in mind that Strasbourg has its own international airport and one of the ritziest train stations with hourly trains to Paris , London , or Brussels . Basel in Switzerland is also an option. Serviced by major international airlines and low-cost ...
